Ravens Trade News: Marcus Peters, etc...

One thing I don't get in all these trade talks is how the media treats comp picks. They always assume you're getting a comp pick if you're letting a player walk, but forget that you need to sign less players than you sign. I.e. The Jags aren't guaranteed to receive a comp pick for Ngakoue.

Good point.
I think in the Jags case it makes a bit of sense to give them credit for a comp pick, since their cap situation is pretty terrible right now. They can create plenty of room by cutting some guys, but generally speaking, teams looking to shred good players because they can't afford to resign them aren't likely to be signing any expensive FAs to begin with.

I personally am not sold on the idea that Ngakoue can't be resigned by them. They can free up $20M in cap space simply by cutting Marcell Dareus, which I think is a foregone conclusion. Another $5.25M for Marquise Lee, who is largely useless for them.

One signing cancels out one loss that means the Jags can't sign any player just to make sure they're getting a comp pick.
They have at best two other player who are likely targets in FA and their roster has so many holes. They can't risk not signing FAs.
If they want to maximize their return they need to trade him today and for less than what the media suggests. Anything else doesn't make sense from an economic perspective.

Just depends on the structure. We only had $1.8M in cap space to begin with, which isn't really even enough to account for injuries. Maybe this creates some space, but I doubt it adds more than like maybe $2-3M, at most. Also possible they just tacked the full extension onto next year, so maybe its all $6M next year.

Edit: as I look at Snead's current contract, I think the most cap space you could create from this extension is about $1.2M.

If I'm correct, and we should know tomorrow, you're only sitting only $3M in cap space for the trade deadilne.

That's basically nothing, and not close to being able to acquire really anybody of notable contract value.

This extension, to me, looks to just be locking up a player for another year without letting him test the FA market.
Well its speculation either way. I guess we'll all find out soon enough. Till then I'm hoping it is a trade that helps us.

I’m pretty confident today. I really think we’ll get some pass rushing help. Just don’t know who. Not holding my breath for Yannick though

I've had some time to think about it, and I'm not big on paying Yannick big money and giving up draft assets for him. I'd rather make a move for a pass rusher in the draft even if it results in losing 2 first rounds picks. It would be great if we can move into the top 10 and if the Ravens really like someone close to the top 10 I would support making that move as well. I'm honestly okay with losing a first for next year if we can get that one guy.

The problem there is that we suck ass raw at drafting and developing pass rushers

I don't see us landing anyone. We have to take the L and realize that we messed up not focusing enough on pass rusher in the off-season. I think we might make an aggressive move pass rusher in the offseason though. Whether that's paying big money for one or giving up a future first.

Don't think I agree with that. We haven't had a dominant pass rusher since Suggs but that doesn't mean we can't draft them or develop them. We've had Krugar and McPhee get big money deals elsewhere, Za'Darius is playing at a Pro Bowl level, and Judon is going to get himself paid. I think we just haven't found that next great every down edge player to succeed Suggs. That's been a problem for a while. We've been trying too hard in finding that in later rounds and TBH, you have to get a little lucky to do that.

Remember guys, like the Marcus Peters trade, someone who we thought wasn’t on the block could be on the block today, at the last second. That GM could call us and and work out a deal. Time to play the waiting game.

I’m not confident we make a move today. Definitely feels like it’s not gonna happen.
Why’s that? After the Snead move yesterday, I’m feeling more than confident today

Like someone else said, the DL and pass rush hasn't been the same since Brooks passed. That man was damn good at his job and the players seemed to love him.

Shaq makes sense, especially since he's a one year rental and they don't appear to be going anywhere this season.

I think we come up with a pass rusher in free agency, whether that be Barrett or Ngakoue, but I'm not sure it's going to be by 4pm today.

The timing of the Snead contract is just way too much of a sign that we make a move today. EDC has something up his sleeve.
