That's the thing though, I don't know if he's even a decent backup. I have no interest in putting people down, especially our own guys. I'm almost always the kind of person who gives the benefit of the doubt/Homer's a guy who I shouldn't a la James Proche for years now.
Anyway, this is just a guess because I'm just some guy and don't know anything. Huntley only looked ok in the bears and Browns games. In both of those games the other team was prepared for a Lamar Jackson offense and there was no tape on Huntley. With each successive week where the opponent had more understanding of what a Tyler Huntley offense could do, he was basically shut down altogether ESPECIALLY in the redzone.
By the end there he was playing awful against an awful team. People are just so high on him and I can't see him as anything other than a backup that won't embarrass you, but you'll probably lose 9 out of 10 games with.
Maybe that's all you can ask for out of a backup QB in the NFL. I could accept that, it's hard to win with your staring QB. But to say move on from Lamar for Huntley is the kind of stuff that makes me mad because for the same reason you say don't rag on your own players, it's just so disrespectful to LJ
This fanbase is so damn weird… we go from certain few who calls Huntley a better option than Lamar to questioning his fit as a backup completely in a matter of one or maybe two weeks hahaha….. can’t make this stuff up
I think it’s important to remember Huntley only has 3 starts under his belt. But your right people really overreacted to his performances in Cleveland/ GB. A large part of that was due to Lamar struggling. As fans were always looking for a reason why or someone to blame. In this case why the offense was so terrible in recent weeks. I think we were so desperate for a solid offensive outing people overreacted and naturally started asking why Lamar wasn’t doing the same. Even though he was earlier in the year. At the end of the day we’re screwed ,regardless of the back up , if Lamar misses significant time.

im not sure - i think huntley's fine right now as the backup
in my view the backup's someone who should be able to keep the offence on track and on schedule when the starter's out to keep the team in games and help talent perform and help the team survive the starter's absence for a couple or a few weeks
huntley was hamstrung by the injuries in the same ways as lamar and because of that we had no chance of winning with lamar out because huntley's job is to allow the rest of the team to continue performing but the rest of the team was also struggling because of the injuries and other absences so suddenly he's in a position where he has to try and carry the team more than you'd want for a backup
so id say the jury's still out on huntley - no idea if with a better OL he might have been able to do more in the redzone but he's certainly not someone who can overcome deficiencies (and tbf that's not what we should expect from a backup)
well idk about you but when more evidence presents itself, i dont ignore it...
not saying for sure 1 way or the other but have the last few weeks not made you re-evaluate huntley at all as a backup?

Right lol. Obviously that post is about me. You made a good point that we haven't seen Huntley in ideal conditions to know for sure, but he's been pretty darn bad in bad conditions. I think based on that you gotta give him the benefit of the doubt as the players and coaches like him, he knows the system, has some experience now, can get better etc. He's just not some elite QB2 that's gonna get you a first round pick and he's not the answer over Lamar.
Unless you thought he was a better option than Lamar, my post was never about you. Ever.
Yeah, I think Huntley has shown that he can run the offense fairly well as a backup and that's all you can really ask for when your star player goes down. You just need a backup who can manage the game, make a few plays here and there, and not turn the ball over. If we still had JK and/or Gus out there to carry the offensive load then I think Huntley would have been able to lead us to a few more victories, but this team was just too ravaged with injuries.
im not sure - he's run it to the degree that the offence didnt break with huntley in there
but also worth pointing out that the offence did have to shrink and contract to accommodate his limitations which significantly reduced his ability to get our playmakers involved - because the easiest way for a backup QB to keep an offence on track when the starter's out is to get the ball into the hands of your weapons and huntley couldnt consistently do that in a way that allowed those guys to make plays because defences were able to constrict us into an almost entirely short passing attack
you're right though that the best way to support a backup QB is to have an impactful ground game which we also dont have
i guess all im saying is that huntley has done fine and certainly put out a good impression of himself but he's certainly not shown enough that we wouldnt or shouldnt be looking to find someone better to backup lamar... he's no tyrod
Not at all. Not only have injuries screwed him, but you also gotta remember Roman holds any of the QBs back, Lamar or otherwise. I never thought he was the best option over Lamar either so I didn’t have the top notch thoughts anyway in the first place. A backup is meant to come in one or two times during the year, ideally when the games are wrapped up.
Tyrod as a backup is few and far between, and I’d hope you know that
I really don’t understand all of the scrutiny and criticism of Huntley. Outside of this place it’s pretty much the consensus he performed admirably in what was the toughest of situations for an inexperienced QB to be placed. Not sure why we can’t just be happy for him rather than pointing to every little flaw in what seems to be an attempt to defend Lamar. It’s my hope he remains the backup as he at the least can keep us competitive in relief.

A few plays made by others and the day would have looked much different.I was pretty upset with a lot of his bad decisions yesterday (as I think most people were), and the offense has struggled a lot in the red zone with him at the helm. It's hard for me to tell how much the offense is limited by him/other injuries/Roman being Roman. But at the end of the day, I think it's hard to argue he should be replaced. Expectations were probably higher for him than they should have been all things considered. He's a good scheme fit and has enough experience in the system that he should hang around at least until he hits unrestricted free agency.

he constantly had happy feet. Not sure how you can say that. Also didn't get pressured as much as Lamar. Defenses played him much differently.Huntley arm strength sucked as you and others mentioned many times. But Huntley definitely played better behind the line. That's why I say Roman takes most of the blame for not adjusting when Lamar was struggling but to act like Lamar didn't regress the second half of the season is being blind.
