The 2022 Offseason Thread

I personally really like it lol. It’s about time we get a young, bright mind to call plays on at least one side of the ball

yeah, we need some young heads. Him and Leonhard were my top two choices.

So what can my cfb heads tell me about Macdonalds defense in Michigan? Scheme? Coverages? Tendencies? Why are many elated with this hire? Not saying I’m not happy with it but I don’t know much about his time there tbh.

Glad to see Macdonald coming back. Hard to assess what impact he had here but I know he was viewed as a big loss but also a guy that deserved an opportunity. He took that opportunity and ran with it, had a really successful year in Michigan, and is now back at the highest level. Good for him. Hope it pays dividends for us with him getting that year of experience even if it was at the college level (nothing wrong with that).

Here's what I found from what Mike said in an interview last March:

“Look, we’re gonna be multiple,” Macdonald said. “The best way I can describe our scheme is it’s gonna look a lot like the places I’ve been previously. But, you look at, you watch our Baltimore defense, and tell me the times we looked like a 3-4. There’s gonna be a certain percentage there. But there’s gonna be a lot of times we look like a 4-3, there’s gonna be sometimes where we’re 6-1, sometimes we’re gonna look like a 6-2. Sometimes you’re not gonna know what the heck it looks like.

“We’re gonna do everything, baby!” Macdonald said. “We’re gonna pattern match, we’re gonna play zone, we’re gonna play man. So — gonna have it all.”

Bro, did you #SIIE this? Good shit!

I'm on the record saying that I don't know anything about how Macdonald operates. The fact that Michigan fans are upset is promising for us.
You know our powers never let us down

idk but ive still got hutchinson to grade and study (might have to bump him up a few spots on my list now and get to him later tonight lol) - so will take a bit of a look then

from what i noticed with dax hill they used lots of different types of coverage and used lots of disguise in their coverage pre-snap - ran a 3-4 type front too

i know he said in his interviews when he was hired though that he'd tailor the defence to the personnel - no "my way or the highway" with him and his scheme or anything

so conceptually not that different from wink or previous ravens defences in terms of being multiple and versatile and throwing different looks at you - probably just going to layer multiple concepts on top of each other and try and make it look complex for the offence to figure out

what's going to be interesting is seeing what his feelings are about blitzing and simulated pressures and stuff like that

agree. Hopefully we can also cut those 12 men on the field penalties out. We've been awful at this the last few years.

Here’s our future Raven talking about his next DC #SIIEpost

EDC and company with a brilliant chess move. Harbs get that 1 Michigan selection every year. Loan out MacDonald to Michigan.. hire him back the next year.

“Fine Harbs.. here’s your Michigan dude. Now can you let us finish drafting?”

(I’ll still take dax hill in a trade up though. Package that 2nd and one of the many 4ths we have) lol
The only thing to potentially "fear" is if Harbaugh leaves Michigan in the near future (not this year, but soon thereafter) and MacDonald becomes a primary target for Michigan to fill for Harbaugh, i.e. he could be Michigan's next HC.

I appreciate the link, pretty good read. Good insight imo

my biggest fear is Harbs not letting MacDonald do what he wants and micromanages since he’s relatively young and still somewhat new to the whole thing lol

having coaches poached from you isnt inherently a bad thing - it suggests that you've hired good people who've done good jobs - like obviously ideally he sticks around for a while but if he creates something that's good enough to get him a HC job somewhere then that's fine

he's been next in line for a while (until last year basically) - i dont think they'd have hired him or he'd have come back if there were any fears of micromanaging (something that Harbs by all accounts has never been prone to - partly why he's such a respected HC)
