2023 General Draft Thoughts

I ain't gonna lie. As we get closer to the draft, I feel it's more and more likely we'll trade back which sucks because I would love to get Zay Flowers. Then again, I feel like I'm gonna rage when either the Giants, Chargers, or the other purple team draft him.

That being said, Brother @JAAM , who on this list is on your #SIIE Candidates list?
I’m all in on Addison or Flowers. Dream is JSN but he’s won’t make it to us. Of course I thought the same thing about Kyle last year. But yea either Addison or Zay and I’d be absolutely elated

#SIIE

i say again... it's a shame we're not looking for a TE because this TE class is so deep and so talented at the top too

my only hope is that the dearth of depth and talent at WR makes teams re-evaluate some of these TEs as (weapons) and dont worry so much about what kind of receiver they acquire

but there's a bunch of guys in this class of all different types - all highly athletic and highly talented

Thoughts?

first thing ive noticed so far

the better WR drafting teams have drafted (in the first 3 rounds), players with less ideal testing numbers etc. - obviously this is a very vague set of data to draw conclusions (because averages arent that useful)... for example the ravens edge data is basically useless because we drafted 2 very specific types of EDGE guy for years but they were at opposite ends of the height/weight/speed spectrum so cancel each other out somewhat lol

so for instance, the average weight of a ravens EDGE is 255lbs ish which is funny because for ages the ravens were drafting only guys over 265lbs or under 245lbs lol

This is a really interesting draft now that I'm pretty much done all of my film/clip review. One big thing I'm noting this year is the advanced age of a shit ton of guys due to that 6th year of eligibility thanks to covid. It's wild watching a guy, liking him but thinking that he needs to develop, only to find that he's already the same age as some guys with 2-3 years of NFL experience. Keion White is a prime example. Raw as all hell and needs development but is already 24 years old.

Promise I won't send any more of these. They're fun but I really think PFN has a busted board. Don't think you should be able to do stuff like this.

Im starting to really like Calijah Kancey. I think he will for sure be a liability in the run game but worth it in the way the league sits right now. Dude could be an abosutle menace - he and queen would be missiles on blitzs

My positional thoughts...

QB: Think we've hit the top guys ad nauseam. Middle rounds have a few long-term backup types but not many translatable skills from the outside of the top 3/4.

RB: Deep in the middle rounds and then drops off considerably.

WR: One, maybe two top end guys and then a bunch of day 2/early day 3 options. Some intriguing guys late with a couple of standout traits but not the complete package.

TE: So deep which is weird to say about TE. There are viable rotational players at a minimum all throughout this draft.

OT: A couple of top end guys and then a bunch of swing Ts. Not a terrible class but also not a great class if you have an immediate need.

iOL: No real top end talent, but a lot of guys that I think could start in this league in time. Another class that's strong in the middle and then fizzles out at the end of day 3.

DL: So many guys with some standout traits that have never put them together in the early-mid rounds. Like some other positions, the drop off is pretty considerable.

Edge: Deep all throughout the draft. Some really good talent on day 1 and day 2. Lots of guys toward the end of the draft that have traits that lead to a rotational role.

LB: A pretty weak class. Even the top guys have questions. Noticed a startling lack of instincts from this group this year. And the ones that have the instincts don't have the physical traits.

CB: So deep. Tons of top end talent. Think there will be guys that go undrafted that would be mid-round picks in a normal year.

S: Nothing spectacular. A few nice options in the middle of the draft but no one that truly stands out.

For CBs we might have a shot a I want Joey Porter Jr the most. Cam Smith would be my second choice

Interesting seeing some of the draftniks finalizing boards this week and basically saying that the number of players with draftable grades is on the lower side. Based on what I've seen, I don't disagree. Some positions stay strong throughout the draft, but a significant number of positions have such a steep drop.

For me personally, I ended up with ~180 draftable grades but there's a good chunk that are in my late day 3 bucket. That round 5-6 range could be really interesting.

still only got grades on 150ish guys right now but certainly feels like there's a significant fall-off after the 4th round

feels like a pretty decent class before that fall-off though - held up, as you say, by certain positions (CB, EDGE, TE and some OL and WR depth on day 2 and early day 3)
