The Random Thought Thread

EDC has been killer on day 1 of the draft. Really awful in RD2. Pretty dang good in RD3. Then largely bad across all of day 3 with his best round being unsurprisingly RD4.

reminder that EDC has been running the draft since well before 2019

but regardless... obviously R2 has been an issue for the ravens going back a long time but assuming we only look at his picks since 2019, it's hard to evaluate given he's only drafted 2 guys in the 2nd round before Rosengarten (JK and Ojabo) and both have struggled severely with injuries - obviously ojabo was a risky pick because he was injured coming in but hard to call JK a bad pick when he's had 2 unpredictable horror injuries but looked like a superstar when he was on the field

Rd 3 has definitely been good

and day 3 has been fine - he's managed to consistently find effective depth on day 3 with some starters mixed in which is exactly what you want from day 3...
2019: justice hill and ben powers
2020: broderick washington and geno stone
2021: tylan wallace
2022: isaiah likely, jordan stout, daniel faalele and we'll see what happens with JAD, Pepe and Kolar

and looking at 2023:
tavius robinson is already a contributor and vorhees is in the starting LG competition

I guess that's my point (with respect to he's been running the draft longer than his title of GM).

The guy gets day 1 right.
We've had real problems with R2.
Pretty excellent R3.
Otherwise day 3 is mostly bad. But that is not unexpected and it doesn't mean there haven't been some really good guys picked late. There certainly have been. But I don't think (pure gut feeling) EDC is any better or any worse than the next guy on day 3. He is killer in R1 and R3 though. Many GMs can't do even do that.

but i guess my question is... why do you think day 3 has been bad?

for context, around the league as a whole, around 25% of starters come from day 3 but more than 3/5 of all draft picks are from day 3

and hit rates on full-time starters once you get out of R2 are not high...

~70% in R1
~50% in R2
~30% in R3
~20% in R4
~14% in R5
~8% in R6
~6% in R7

if i look at 2019-2023
EDC in R4 is at about 25% starters
EDC in R5 is at about 16% starters
EDC in R6 is at 0% starters
EDC in R7 is at 50% starters

obviously these dont include depth players or rotational pieces either where the ravens are generally pretty good too

hard to say we're bad on day 3 given general hit rates

If you had on hand the players that made up your percentages I'd like to see. But I'm not trying to cause you any work. So feel no obligation.

Either way, thanks for your perspective!

I swear he's one (key word here) of the worst traitors in Ravens history. It's almost as much of a cap as Dak's recent comments about his contract.
does this pass Kubiak for you?

Can't wait to see how good Queen is without Ro at his side. Queen definitely fell off the last month of the season.

WAY beyond K****k. You know what? I think Q***n is the worst the more I think about it. At least we didn't draft Tucker's predecessor or E***s.

Well, we saw who the difference maker is when Ro got here. Before Ro got here, Queen was an average to slightly above average ILB. Ro has made him better. We’ll see how good he is as the #1 ILB in Pitt.

When do the Ravens usually announce all their open Training Camp practices and stadium practice? I want to go back to MD this Summer and catch an Orioles game at Camden Yards and would want to have it be the same time the open practices or stadium practice is.

Baltimore folks where’s the best place to park for Os games these days? I used to park in the garage at the bottom of W Conway St but it’s been a minute since I’ve been back in town. 2017 I think

It just hit me for like the 10th time lol but do yall realize we had ed reed, suggs and ray lewis all on the same team at the same time..thats wild
…..and Haloti Ngata.

Along with a bunch of other guys at the same time like Trevor Pryce, Adalius Thomas, Samari Rolle, Jarrett Johnson, Chris McCalister, Bart Scott, etc.. Crazy loaded D roster.

It's still a sore spot that the other half of the roster was so without equally memorable names during a lot of that period that we never won a SB with those star studded DEF's.
