General Draft Thoughts

@JoeyFlex5
Im not altogether sold on Uche (in the 2nd)mostly for the reasons @rossihunter2 put forth.

Something that does catch my eye is that he will line up as an ILB in what looks like a 3-3 look and at times looks great chasing stuff down on the edge and looks really explosive as a tackler. very fast to the ball outside and finishes. I don't see him right now as overly instinctive in his reads from that position but.... DeCosta and Wink are all about these position less guys and that makes me think the Ravens must have a plan for him if they take him in the 2nd along those lines.

With a year in the system and some lbs. its possible he's an upgrade over Bowser at SAM

He gets hung up on blocks from OLB and needs counters as a rusher.
Too easily figured out by college tackles after a few reps.
sometimes swallowed in the run game.

i think this statement is probably damning for him coming to baltimore - given that this FO has stated they are looking for immediate impact from those first 7 picks (basically all the way through the 4th round), it would be odd for us to pick a guy who needs development and who would likely be stuck behind an established vet for at least 1 year

all our confirmed meetings. Notice Murray was the only Private one? Must have been an early priority. Also read what eric is saying. clearly more high on murray than queen ( based on size and saying queen only really appeared on the map last year)

"It really just depends what flavor you like, Murray or Queen," DeCosta said during a Thursday conference call. "I think they're looked at side by side as probably two of the very best inside linebackers."

Inside linebacker is one of the Ravens' thinnest positions in the aftermath of Josh Bynes signing with the Cincinnati Bengals and Patrick Onwuasor signing with the New York Jets. There is obvious room for a three-down inside linebacker to fill the void left by C.J. Mosley, the four-time Pro Bowler who departed to the Jets in free agency last year.

It's possible the Ravens may find an inside linebacker later in the draft who can earn playing time as a situation player. DeCosta named inside linebacker as one of the draft's deeper positions. However, Murray and Queen are viewed as the inside linebackers with the potential to start from Day 1 as Mosley did as a rookie.

There's no doubt Murray would feel at home in Baltimore's locker room. He'd be the fifth Oklahoma player drafted by the Ravens over the past two years, joining Pro Bowl tight end Mark Andrews, Pro Bowl right tackle Orlando Brown Jr., wide receiver Marquise Brown and offensive lineman Ben Powers.

Tight end Mark Andrews gave his report on two of his former Oklahoma teammates, inside linebacker Kenneth Murray and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Murray also has an incredible life story that leaves no doubt about his special character. He has saved a stranger's life by performing CPR, and he has three siblings with special needs.

However, drafting a defensive player from Oklahoma would be a different twist for the Ravens. The Sooners have struggled defensively in recent years and gave up 27.3 points per game last season, including three games in which they yielded at least 40 points. But Murray was by far Oklahoma's best defensive player with 102 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and four sacks. DeCosta has watched enough tape on Murray to know that he was special on a defense that wasn't.

"Tremendous athlete, a cerebral guy, he's got really good length," DeCosta said. "He's been a really good defensive player on a team that really hasn't had a lot of really good defensive players lately. He's a great student of the game, he's got great intangibles."

Murray (6-foot-2, 241 pounds) is more of a throwback linebacker, bigger than Queen (6-foot-0, 229 pounds) but also a playmaker. Queen was a little faster at the Scouting Combine, running a 4.50 in the 40-yard dash compared to 4.52 for Murray. They both suffered hamstring pulls.

DeCosta thinks Murray and Queen fit the mold of what NFL defenses are looking for, and he did not see Queen's size as a deterrent. He made 85 tackles including 12 for loss at LSU, showing his ability as a blitzer with three sacks while also excelling in pass coverage.

"Not as big as Murray, (but) very explosive," DeCosta said. "LSU has put a number of really good defensive players in the league over the last four or five years. He's a guy that's sideline to sideline, he can play downhill, he's a very good cover linebacker.

"He was not a household name before this year. He played his best football probably over the second half of the season, really good performances in the playoffs and national championship."

ESPN's Todd McShay says LSU linebacker Patrick Queen would be a 'perfect marriage of talent, value and need.'

Whether the Ravens draft Queen or Murray remains to be seen. But both players have the overall qualities NFL teams are looking for.

"I think the league has kind of morphed into more of a speed league in some respects, guys that can run, cover, and blitz and do all those things." DeCosta said. "But you also need a guy that can effectively play the run and take on guys. In a perfect world you'd like to have a bigger guy, but you're also looking for a bigger guy who can run."

agreed. But we say that stuff every year. remember the whole instant coffee thing? ended up with Kaufusi and Correa.
Uche is good value in the third and we have two SAM backers potentially in their final year. Im pretty curious how they might use him year one. could be part of a dime package inside with some flex outside. not sure.

this LSU draft class is outrageous - i know its been said a million times before but the group is insane:

gonna post in brackets where they all are on my board (except Joe Burrow because he's artificially lowered on my board because we have Lamar)

QB: Joe Burrow (1st overall pick)
RB: Clyde Edwards-Helaire (76)
WR: Justin Jefferson (17)
TE: Thad Moss (141)
OT: Saahdiq Charles (69)
OG: Damien Lewis (47)
C: Lloyd Cushenberry (35)
DL: Rashard Lawrence (178)
EDGE: K'Lavon Chaisson (12)
LB: Patrick Queen (23) and Jacob Phillips (154)
S: Grant Delpit (26)
CB: Kristian Fulton (22)

there's also michael divinity and steven sullivan who i have as udfas but may well get drafted

that's 6 guys who might go in the 1st round
and then depth to follow

think this could be a key indicator as to who DeCosta would prefer. Queen is more ready now as a 3 down guy but Murray COULD be....MIGHT be...an abject home run pick by year two

I don't want a raw dude for a first round pick esp at ILB.

i agree with you - i get the sense that DeCosta doesnt want either of them in the 1st round - he very specifically called them top 40 players rather than first round type players - i think that distinction is important

I'm starting to think it could be a pick no one expects like josh jones and I would NOT be unhappy with that. I think he has all pro guard potential even though he's been a tackle in college

he's one of the few tackles i dont like converting to guard tbh

https://twitter.com/mortreport

this dude is slowly posting the video from Tua's proday

i have to say i think it's great for him to show off his recovery and how it's likely he'll make a full recovery...

that being said while the footwork is good, the hip looks stiff, the mechanics look off and there's no follow-through in his throws (most of which is understandable coming off a hip injury) but i wonder if it actually makes the dolphins etc. second guess

proday = good just to have it happen in the first place
proday = bad for showing good throwing mechanics etc. at this point in his recovery

Tbh i dnt really dislike murry like how everyone else does. Even if he dont become an elite talent, he would atleast be solid for us.. i just dont know how smart he nor queen is.

All things being equal, here’s my ideal positional breakdown of the 9 Raven picks

2- IOL
2- LB
2- WR
1- RB
1- Edge or DT
1- S or TE

Of course someone falling completely nullifies my list haha

and someone will fall, it's the nature of the draft.

@rossihunter2
looks like The Ravens have met with your boy
https://nfltraderumors.co/texas-am-dt-justin-madubuike-meeting-with-nine-teams/
Could you fill me in on what you like about him? Ive only watched a little .

Also, it appears that not only did a private workout with Kenneth Murray take place, we have also subsequently met in the virtual.
https://nfltraderumors.co/oklahoma-lb-kenneth-murray-has-virtual-meeting-scheduled-with-six-teams/

here are the notes on the vid i was going to do lol (interestingly i just did a mock that i'll post later with some gifs - just making the gifs now - where we took madubuike in round 1):

Justin Madubuike Film session notes:

there are wins all over his tape - the Ole Miss game is a veritable buffet of pressures and domination - just an all around fun time

Came in a little lighter at 293 lbs for the combine than I expected but he demonstrates power all over his tape that I wouldn’t be worried as an evaluator

Can line up all over the DL, in the Ravens scheme he’s likely a 3t who can rush from any spot between the tackles - has done some rushing from 5t in college but that’s not where he’ll be used in the NFL - if you can schematically isolate him with a centre that’s a sure-fire way to get pressure - he was frequently double-teamed in college but held up well but the reason for that is that he’s borderline unblockable 1v1

he’s incredibly nimble and has really nice lateral movement, sheds well and frequently pops linemen into the backfield either to reset the LoS or to penetrate using great leverage

POP!!! - leverage, powerful hands, explosive power in a compact frame

Cons: can sometimes struggle with his length and can lose the punch albeit he normally finds a way to come back and fight his way back into the down - can get outreached by really rangy OL - normally can compensate for it by continuing to work

can have a tendency to get himself redirected when he gets overly aggressive but this is rare and distinctly coachable

the ravens do a lot of 2-gapping on the DL and that doesn’t necessarily play to his greatest strength but he can definitely do it from the b-gap - but would limit his ability to play 1t or 0t on early downs

He has such violent hands to go along with natural and easy athleticism with power and some lateral quickness - and really bendy for someone of his shape

so strong at the point of attack and more often than not you can see his power in the way the OL's heads snap backwards when he engages - very consistent seeing this on tape
