The General Offensive Line Thread

If we're discussing trade possibilities and are searching for a solid starter who wouldn't cost an arm and a leg, I feel that one of the more applicable targets would be Zach Strief. He's 33, so mileage is a concern, but he had arguably his best season last year and has quietly been one of the better right tackles over the past several years. The Saints just drafted Ryan Ramczyk in the 1st round, and although Strief received a modest raise of $1 million in May on top of his still-meager base salary of $1.7 million, perhaps they could be enticed to send him away for a mid-to-late draft pick if Ramczyk shows promise. Given that Strief is due $5.1 million next season with a dead cap of just $1.1 million, he also wouldn't be a liability for our books. I admittedly haven't followed their OTAs, so this is just a surface estimate; but he could make for a relatively safe two-year rental, at least if we're looking to acquire an immediate starter.

This is exciting:

Bisciotti: "I’d say that I don’t think that we have room for a starter at WR now ... I think I’m going to save that last punch for an OL."

I don't mind if it's an average starter but if we get a big name up front it changes our whole season. We don't have to throw away another season we can win it all this year.

Camp cuts. Rookie starts outperforming vet at a much cheaper rate. Just wait and see what happens. Still wouldn't get my hopes up like that though, but you never know.

If we can get an average RT and one of our C proves to be average, this OL looks really solid and so does the offense. It's not asking for the moon honestly.

I think one of them needs to be ''good''. Alex Lewis is average. Can't have 3 out of 5 guys being average. You can get away with 2.

I really liked Lewis at guard last year. He had his struggles for sure but most of his bad play was when he got kicked to the edge.

He was average to below average at G and awful at LT (which was expected)
He needs to have improved considerably before i consider him a strong point in this O line.

Right now the only two guys that I know who will be GOOD to GREAT are Yanda and Stanley. Thats why this O line has a lot of skepticism attached to it.

Why would you consider him below average? Even with the struggles he had in pass pro starting off, I wouldn't consider the play generally worse than average. Definitely a small sample size- but seems like one worth betting on imo.

aside from his 1 game vs the steelers i didn't see a guy that dominated at all. he was just a JAG ( just another guy) . He wasn't a liability but he didn't strike me as a guy that offered anything other than average guard play.

With the additions of Siragusa and Eluemunor, I am confident that we will be ok at guard, but I am not confident in anyone stepping up at center or right tackle. I would only be confident at right tackle if Yanda were to move over because he done a decent job when called upon in the past. I would hate to move a Pro-Bowler out of his dominant position though. I hope we can at least get someone at center or right tackle that I do feel confident in before the start of the season. Ozzie will be on top of it, I am sure.

Stanley and Yanda also had health issues last season, we're screwed if that continues this season. Man i wish we had a line like the Eagles/Bengals/Patriots etc

I'd kill for the Patriots' line. Scheme diverse and above average in both phases.

On that note I've wanted us to trade for Marcus Cannon since 2012, I haven't seen a dominant, diverse player like him since Carl Nicks and they still sat on the bench for 5 years... now he's All Pro and the best RT in the league. Go figure

It's good to read those quotes from Bisciotti though. Has anyone from the Ravens acknowledged that this was a problem before?

Their line is good. No question.
Whitworth and their star guard went LOL and got paid elsewhere(Zeilter is now with the Browns, and Whitworth with the Rams). Not as good anymore. Only good guy on that line is Clint Boling who is slightly above average.

Andy Dalton is going to have a long year.
