dude is a literal wizard - like he's just stealing from these GMs around the league

he's literally going up to these GMs and saying I want player x, I'll give you a 4th round pick for him - the other GMs are flummoxed that he'd even ask but ask for more back

EDC: 'ok, how about a 5th round pick'

they cave instantly

so far we've managed to acquire marcus peters and calais campbell with 5th round picks lol
He learned from the best

these 5th round picks have become quite valuable to EDC in trade bate. Lets acquire more for next offseason!

Idk man, maybe Eric is loading up for a run right now and feels like Judon is a piece worth keeping.

Adding Campbell to the defense we had in 2019 is a power play, adding Campbell and losing Judon and being unable to replace him would be a net gain but not by much and could be the difference between a ring and no ring
I agree with you, but that's a lot of cap space eaten up by those two when we have needs at ILB, WR, G, etc. Do we go to the draft for the positions? I'd love to sign a guy like Schobert but I still don't even think we have the cap space right now. In EDC I truss. I'll let him do his thang.

Gotta say, it’s hard not to appreciate DeCosta’s aggressiveness. He doesn’t shy away, but it’s not reckless. It’s all calculated and he’s shown that he’s not going to sit there and wait. If there’s someone he wants or someone isn’t getting the job done, he’s going to make something happen. No offense to Ozzie of course, but it’s nice having someone with a little more fire.

we already had a legit secondary but we've now upgraded a DL that was at times stout but not much of a pass rush threat... that's over now - we still potentially need to find a 3t but given how often we play with 2 or fewer DL this is a major move

our biggest needs on defence now are EDGE and LB but honestly everything else we might add is depth or rotational - like it'd be great to add another corner or safety but ultimately we've got 2 needs on defence right now at EDGE and LB

and on offence we need IOL and another WR

Yeah I even said this to a jaguars fan a month ago when he wanted Hurst for a 5th
They're idiots bro. That franchise is ran by idiots as well. I realized that when their fans said they could get Hurst for a 5th. They just don't know football lol.

My only concerns are the $ and is potentially extending a guy that is up in years. He will be 34 at the start of 2020.

absolutely - if there was no risk, other teams would have given up more but he was playing at a ridiculously high level even last year and with the way this defence attacks he may not need to play as many snaps as he would with the jags because our DL dont play huge snap percentages to keep them fresher

34 is a risk but i think any extension adds on at most 2 years with almost no guarantees in year 3 and i think its a calculated risk by EDC knowing that the cap is expected to inflate post-CBA a lot in 2021 and 2022

Assuming Judon stays at this point, don’t really see the value in FA at most of these positions.

On offense, WR is clearly more like to come in the draft. I’d think we pick up a cheaper OL in FA and also draft 1 or 2.

On defense, I expect OLB to come via the draft. Another DT would be nice via the draft. Think ILB and DB could be other positions that we’re looking at both, but obviously cheaper guys in FA

i was skeptical of earl when we got him cause i love safties and its kinda easy to tell how theyre gonna play.... i suck at watching pass rushers and i dnt know how well campbell played last year, so my only worry is that i hope he still has some shit left in the tank

That pass rush is the thing that prevented the defense from being elite last year. This helps. Still would be nice to get a ILB as well and OL is another area we can improve but these are doable.

Love the player

but I worry about age and price.
He's one of the best of his generation. You could argue that if you took aaron donald out of the equation he's been the best for most of this decade.

there's a cool dichotomy in EDC's tenure where day 3 picks simultaneously have tremendous value but are also worth nothing depending on the situation

we love to hoard those picks because we know we can get contributors as long as we have multiple picks so acquiring them is good value for us but they also have diminished value that if we can get a vet contributor then we absolutely have no problem sending away a day 3 pick in a heartbeat

i think just more generally we value picks just the same but we're less precious about keeping our own

it's still early but interesting trends are emerging

that's basically where i was before any of this already - was looking at the free agent market and wasnt really interested at all in what was out there - ive been looking at this draft class since january in a pretty hardcore way and i think there are a ton of early contributors available in this class

Day 3 picks are for good players with big price tags

day 1 and 2 picks are good cheap young talent

the reason i say there's a dichotomy is that we also value day 3 picks for developmental talent in a way that other franchises dont seem to - it's hard to really articulate clearly

He's showing that "going for it" mentality for sure. We have a young team and a QB on a rookie contract - take advantage while you can.

Sure, you may be able to find a Judon for a 5th but the chances are much greater that you end up with a Robert Myers (blast from the past, eh?). When you have the space, get proven talent. Value picks but also value what those picks can provide outside of the draft.
