2020 Edge Draft Thread

Brent urban played a bit of both, but he was the prototype 5tech.

think Aaron Donald, Grady Jarrett, Gerald McCoy, Geno Atkins. Guys who make their money by penetrating quickly and living in the backfield.
My only problem with Kinlaw potentially playing the same way as Aaron Donald and Geno Atkins is that he is so tall. At 6'6'' I feel like he'd have a problem gaining leverage across from guards

I think that’s an overblown argument, you don’t have to be short to generate leverage, some guys have that lean and some dont. Deforest Buckner has no problem at all generating leverage, same with Gerald McCoy, ndamakong suh, etc.

And actually, if you are taller, and you do have that lean and balance to keep your pads low, you generate substantially more leverage than a short guy, because you have a lot more push coming from the lower body with each churn of the leg.

brent urban was tall but he also had a problem with standing straight up and exposing his chest to blockers. Kinlaw plays with excellent pad level and should have no problems with leverage, but even better he plays with incredible quickness and uses his length well.

I obviously have more film study to do lol

I’m starting to think maybe we find another McPhee types. A smaller DL we can switch to edge defender and move inside at times

Alex highsmith is an edge guy who I believe could make that transition.

also marlon Davidson is listed as an edge, but he’s a very big and stocky edge and I love him as an edge setting specialist with kick-in ability

I think those will have to be the type of players we target. Get one of those type of players and get an ILB who can cover and stop the run and we’ll benefit huge from that. I could see us use more 4-3 as well or 4-2 formations to stop the run and use a third safety as the Mike. I do like what I’ve seen from LSU Edge K’Lavon Chaisson though. He can get off blocks and bend and can rush untouched with good vision to the QB.

Alex Highsmith could be that guy but he's a small-school guy who's not as dominant as you'd like on tape - would definitely be a guy id be interested in from maybe the 4th round onwards

marlon davidson is someone i feel like if he had played DL or 5tech in college could have been a first round pick but he's spent his whole time at EDGE and i dont think that's where he fits in the NFL

Chaisson also a natural dropper in coverage - useful if we're going to be losing Judon

Exactly how I feel about Davidson, and yeah highsmith doesn’t have the production, but as a day 3 pick man he has some traits, especially if you want a guy who you wanna see slide inside occasionally and let some explosion and quickness just take over.

also, Charlotte is not considered small school based on competition, they’re a D1 FBS school.

I didn’t know that - the competition they play feels low level and small-school-esque or am I just completely wrong and just misevaluated his competition level the whole time?

I just finished watching his Alabama tape and the thing about his coverage skills that I like most is his awareness. When he doesn't find a man in his zone he keeps his head on a swivel and looks for any crossers or players trying to get in behind him rather than just sit there. He is also aware of the screen play which we were poor at covering last year.

They aren’t playing top notch competition lol but they are considered D1 FBS. For example they played Clemson, but they also faced school like old dominion and Florida Atlantic, most of their schedule consists of other lower tier D1 schools.

so the competition isn’t out of this world, but Charlotte is no grand valley state or Ferris state lol

Aware is the right word - he’s aware of what’s around him and understands what his role in the coverage is and so makes good decisions

I might have to revisit his tape at a later date then - have currently got a mid 4th grade on him but that seems to be based on incomplete context right now

4th is an appropriate grade, that’s about where I’d have him.

like I said he’s all traits, no production. He’d be a project but I like what he brings to the table, lot of explosion and bend and quickness and size.

Davidson is a guy I have on radar since early in he college season. He made Brown's life much easier on Auburn line.

my favourite guy to watch was K'Lavon Chaisson - dont know if he's one of the guys you've watched already - his college playoff tape is pretty great - and i thought he was pretty good in some of the other games too (not great vs the run though)
im also not a fan of most of this edge class - but if you want to see a truly dominant stretch watch AJ Epenesa move inside for the final couple of drives vs minnesota

as for who jumps out - i dont think there is anyone - on my board right now there's Chase Young at the top (obviously) and then a massive gap all the way down towards the end of the 1st early 2nd where there's a clump of 4 guys - it's a really weak class and not one where you want to be needing an edge rusher - the more i watch this class the more i start to understand that we have to get someone in free agency or maybe even two someones
That game from Epenesa vs. Minnesota! I could watch that about five more times. Interesting to see how quick he is over a guard. inside. ;looks like the guard was waiting on a strike (makes sense). he's dominant through most of that game but really hits his stride around 5:36 and out..

that 2 minute drill at the end is unbelievable - have you had a chance to watch chaisson yet?

I really like what I’ve watched of Curtis Weaver. He’s not at all like Correa from what I’ve seen so far. He can get off blocks, rounds the edge, and can explode fast. That said, he’s a Boise State defender and those guys worry me.

Yes but I need to watch more.
My first takes on him are that he's probably played corner at some point in his life. seems to have high level understanding of zone drops and is pretty good at pattern match man type coverage out of zone. Looks very athletic with superior want to.
My concern is probably size. He seems to get engulfed by big tackles at times while rushing. I thought he was a little stymied at times with a sort of go to club without a counter.
Have to see more of him taking on blocks. He's actually so quick that he sometimes makes a guy across from him whiff at the line and gets in the backfield for a tackle for loss. ( 4 minute mark at Auburn).
I almost never watch highlight videos but I didn't have a true understanding of how versatile he is off the edge until I did. He's a playmaker Raven type and he has the ability to get flat, speed off the edge, pretty nice spin. needs to add counters, Id say. I'm starting to like the thought of him....he puts me in the mind of Tyrann Matthieau in a strange way as far as his presence on field if that makes sense.
Been geeking on Khalid Kareem a bit.
