Head Coaching Candidates

Which of these potential coaching candidates for the Ravens do you like if Harbaugh gets the axe?

https://ebonybird.com/2018/11/12/head-coaching-candidates-ravens-john-harbaugh-gets-fired/

The idea of bringing in David Toub or Chris Petersen peaks my interest so far.
I really like the idea of getting Matt Campbell. He need a guy with the ability to make a great defense again, and you know an Iowa guy will work to fix up the line and running game. He could be the type of guy to bring back that bully, smashmouth personality the Ravens used to have. Just now with a decent passing offense to go with that.

Chris Peterson would be my other choice.

David Toub wouldnt be a change - if we were going to hire a guy like Toub we might as well keep Harbaugh

A Special Teams coach.....really? I cant.

Toub started out as a Special Teams coach but he is now the Assistant Head Coach to Andy Reid. Per article:

"Toub was named the Assistant Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs this off-season next to Andy Reid. That says a lot about Toub’s character that the Chiefs would give him such high-command of an already well-run organization..."

Yea i get that. Im sure hes a lovely guy and all, but the issue i always had with Harbs is just that, hes a ST guy. Id just feel better knowing that our HC has a specialty outside of special teams. And then lets say he brings in his own guy who is a great OC, guess....see ya later

i mean jerry rosburg is also assistant head coach here - it basically means nothing outside of the organisation - it means they value Toub as a leader within the organisation sure - but i bet you that's similar to a fairly large number of special teams guys throughout the league - i mean hell look at bones in LA

and let's be real - he's got high-command of his own unit but he's not in charge of that football team in any way
there's a reason people poach the OCs from the chiefs and that's because they come directly from the Andy Reid offensive coaching tree

that's the problem in the modern nfl - if we hire a non-offensive head coach we're gonna lose any good offensive coach that comes through the building because they'll be poached by other teams as soon as they show promise

And this is the reason I want an offensive minded coach, whether thst be DeFillipo, LaFleur, Riley, etc..

Eric Bienemy Chiefs OC is also another candidate. I just don't want another S.T or defensive minded coach. These days you're winning because of your offense, very rarely you win consistently because of your defense.

The only thing with Bieniemy is that he helps design the gameplan and scheme etc. but he doesn't call plays - to bring in an offensive HC is great but if he has no experience playcalling then its quite a bit of a gamble - and pretty hard to work out whether he'll be any good in a HC interview...

People like to hype up offensive minds, but Belichick, Pete Carroll, Mike Zimmer, Dan Quinn, and Ron Riveria are among the better coaches in the league, and are all defensive guys who have done pretty well. I'd say Sean McDermott is pretty good too considering what he's working with.

And there's plenty of offensive minds that have ended up as utter failures as head coaches. Hell, Hue Jackson was once that big, hotshot offensive mind that everyone wanted.

There is no guarantee that these so-called "offensive" or "defensive" minded coaches will succeed as a HC or that the "special teams" minded coaches will fail as a HC. I just want the guy that replaces Harbaugh to be a great coach period; regardless of his specialty!

bill bellicheck has the greatest qb of all time who basically runs his own offence + BB is the best coach of all time

The Vikings are very much thriving on good OCs but notice that they'll likely end up with their 3rd OC in 3 years because Pat Shurmur just got a HC job, and John DeFilippo is gonna get one at the end of this season too... Mike Zimmer's a great coach but he's reliant on a good offensive mind - do you think the vikings succeed with case keenum without an offensive mind?

The Falcons are a mess on defence which is what Dan Quinn should be a specialist at solving, and their offence is reliant on great playcalling and OC - they lost Kyle Shanahan and it's taken almost 2 years for Sarkesian to show anything as an OC - and the Falcons are 3-6

Ron Rivera is a great coach but the Panthers are a much better team because of what Norv Turner has done with their offence this year

you are right that these guys are great coaches - but outside of bellicheck who has josh mcdaniel, they all have to hit the offensive coordinator carousel every year (or 2) and hope their team stays functional because the grim reality is that if you dont have an offence, your team means nothing in the 2018 nfl

The Patriots arent winning games because of their defence, the seahawks are certainly not winning games with their defence anymore, the vikings arent winning games with their defence (although they are the only team of the bunch who could claim they might be able to), the falcons are 3-6 and not winning games, the panthers arent winning games because of their defence even if it is good, the bills are only winning games when their offence fires

doesnt matter how good those coaches are - its an offensive league and good offences beat great defences in this current format

if you want a consistent offence (and that's something you should want in this period of the nfl) then you need to invest in an offensive minded head coach or you'll be constantly changing your organisation

of the above teams you've mentioned the head coaches of:
mcdaniels has been rumoured to maybe be given a 2nd chance on the HC carousel
Brian schottenheimer has taken over the seahawks offence and has done well - they probably get to keep him for another year
John DeFilippo is gonna be an HC somewhere
Falcons probably get to keep sarkesian mostly because no one will want him
Norv Turner probably stays at the panthers coz he's been around the league a long time but maybe he gets another shot at being a HC

beyond that the Titans just got a new offence and OC under their defensive HC - they're gonna lose Matt LaFleur probably after only 1 year
matt patricia just got to Detroit, he may end up losing Jim Bob Cooter if enough teams are looking for offensive help as HC

the list continues...

I think you need a HC who has the mental agility to think like both regardless of their specialty. A good DC will be able to think like an OC to know what works and what doesn’t. Same goes for a good OC so if they become HC then they should be able to think like the other. The league is trending toward offense so having a HC with that in mind is nice but not a prerequisite in this league. Bill is so successful because he knows what works on offense against good defenses and that’s the key.

Just a quick comment here.......Brady is a good QB, but the Pats offense certainly has benefited greatly from BB’s regimented approach to the game and having the same OC for almost 15 years. IMO that talent and stability in philosophy, game planning and play calling are the main reasons they have been consistently successful, not Brady. Many feel you could plug any one of a number capable QBs into that system and they could have been just as successful.

Honestly I really don't want The Ravens to fired John Harbaugh and I hope that he stays. I'm hoping for The Ravens to make the playoffs this year because I honestly like what John Harbaugh has built coaching staff wise this year especially on the offensive side of the ball. I don't think The Ravens front office have consistently done a good job with surrounding John Harbaugh with talent but even with limited cap space at times and injuries it is probably fact that John Harbaugh has only had one losing season for the past four years.

The hires of D'Alessandris, Urban and Roman on offense turned out to be great. But honestly what do you think of Marty? He's ultimately in charge of the offense and the results aren't good.
