Not necessarily. They could be hitting hard right now trying to work out something long-term that reduces that number for this year.
They’re 19M over the cap. So that 16M hit is staggering. Even if they lower it significantly, it’s going to be incredibly hard for them to keep him.

Money talks, and it seems that's what Landry is after. Still think there's a high likelihood he gets moved, but definitely not discounting the possibility of him staying at this point.

i mean i can see him taking the 1 year 16 mill franchise tag but i dont see a way they get a long term deal done

Ja'Wuan James, Lawrence Timmons, Julius Thomas, and Mike Pouncey cuts alone will cover more than that. They definitely have the room on a long-term deal. The question would be whether either side is open to that at this point.

I'm just not throwing the possibility out, is all. This could easily lower Landry's price back into a range that the Dolphins are comfortable.

i only just realised that the 19m doesnt even include the robert quinn trade (i think his cap hit is gonna be like 12 mill so they've got to clear around 31 mill of cap space by march 14th (and they cant physically get rid of landry now until march the 14th so even if they arent keeping him they have to clear space for him to be on the books))

cutting timmons, thomas and ja'wuan james clears 22 million or so - that at least gets them to the league year with landry under the cap but if they cant trade him by then then they have to clear another 9 mill in space to make sure quinn comes in under the cap + they'll have to clear extra space for the draft picks, ERFAs, RFAs and any free agent signings - that's gonna be around 4.5 mill i imagine (maybe more and RFA and ERFA offers have to be submitted before the league deadline too)

so they're gonna have to extend cameron wake again, and probably do some restructures to ndamukong suh, tannehill, reshad jones, pouncey...
but all that's gonna do is postpone how up against the cap they are...

i mean the only other thing i can think of is if the dolphins truly are committed to getting a rookie qb as a lot of the nfl cognoscenti think then maybe they cut tannehill completely and get the 15mill cap savings...

Let’s not forget they have to save money for 53, practice squad, future FA re-signings, and rookie contracts. I don’t think those cuts are enough. Just clearing Landry’s 15M wouldn’t even be enough the get them under the cap.

Btw, he can’t get traded unless he signs his tag, so this is exactly what we needed to happen.

rule of 51 helps for now
but its gonna be a bit of a task to get there - they can do it but im not sure what shape they are gonna be in moving forwards

But that's assuming he stays on the tag. In this scenario (I am admitting its unlikely), he'd be signing a long-term deal and significantly reducing that number.

Wow, yeah it doesn’t even include Quinn. They’re so tied to their cap when you think of all the cap they must allocate elsewhere, I just don’t see them keeping him and him signing the tag was a requirement in order to trade him. They must move on from him before March 14, so we should see a resolution before hand.

I don’t see the cap reduction great enough to help them enough. If $10M is what he’s rumored to get then he’s probably going to get $12m. Thing is players tend to make more then what the rumors believe them to. I don’t think it’s going to make a huge difference to the point where they get under the cap.

Dolphins now have Quinn and Landry accounting for $27.5 mil - it's not out of the question they sign both to long term deals with big bonuses and low cap hit this year.

now that he's signed the tag his contract cant legally/officially come off the books until after the start of the new league year - so even if we know he's not gonna be a dolphin before 4pm on march 14th they will still have to make room for him on the books

I'm fully expecting to see the headline, "Dolphins Agree to Trade Jarvis Landry to (Insert WR Needy Team Here) in the coming days. They must have something if he signed it this quick.

incredible - they've gone and got marcus peters and aqib talib and franchised joyner - that secondary is gonna be ridiculous with its takeaways

Rams are gonna win a super bowl...

Holy shit what a squad they're throwing together. If roquan fucks around and ends up falling and the rams can get him, look out NFC. They need a LB and probably some OL help. Maybe an edge rusher to step in with Quinn's departure(unless they have one I'm unaware of) and they will be unstoooable

No, that contract will come off the book once they trade him. He cannot be moved unless he signs the tag. It's not about cap space as much as it is about getting value for a player who was going to leave them dry. That's the reason why they tagged him in the first place. It's a base salary, so once they trade him that cap is off the books.
