Rams are surely not playing around. Their horns are up!
I have honestly never heard of a scenario where a team wants to keep a player yet will allow teams to negotiate a contract with said player. It makes no sense to me at all.
I should've clarified further. I meant I never seen a scenario in which a player has been tagged, yet teams give permission to other teams to negotiate contracts. It establishes his value. Dolphins didn't want him at $14M and are/were prepared to let other teams pay that. Now that it's clear Landry isn't getting $14M, his price might have diminished back to the range where the Dolphins are/were comfortable.
It's a lot like letting players test FA and bringing back the contract offers to the original team before making a decision. It's a fairly common practice. This just happens to be a guy they franchised, but it's still establishing his value.
Matt Cassel was tagged then tradedI should've clarified further. I meant I never seen a scenario in which a player has been tagged, yet teams give permission to other teams to negotiate contracts.
Obviously players are allowed to test the FA market and it allow teams to gauge the market. But I don't see any reason for Miami to use the tag yet allow teams to negotiate with the intent on keeping him. Tags are meant for players that are must-keep players that the team would not want to lose. In this case Miami just doesn't want to lose Landry for nothing.

No, that contract will come off the book once they trade him. He cannot be moved unless he signs the tag. It's not about cap space as much as it is about getting value for a player who was going to leave them dry. That's the reason why they tagged him in the first place. It's a base salary, so once they trade him that cap is off the books.
I think the same scenario applies here. The Patriots wanted compensation for a player that was going to walk with them getting nothing.Matt Cassel was tagged then traded
Well to clarify, yes, once the league year starts, the cap is off the books. But I don't think that matters are much as moving him does. Robert Quinn isn't a Dolphin until the league year starts as well but unless they create space, which they have to do prior to March 14th then they can forget about him unless they plan on keeping Landry at 16M. So what matters is what's going on right now rather then the new league year cap space. There's still plenty of time with the legal tampering period to make the moves, the cap clearing on March 14th hardly matters. But they can’t officially trade him until the start of the league year - technically Alex Smith is still a chief and so is Marcus peters
So they have to accommodate his salary before the league year begins officially even if it instantly comes off the books... they won’t be stuck with that cap if they trade him but they will have to make space for it
What would be interesting is that if they do find a trade partner for Landry before the league year begins then they only need to make space for Landry and not Quinn as well (his salary would fit into the cap space that landrys trade would free up)

I can understand that, It seems we see eye to eye on this subject and I feel like yes, it's possible, but I think the possibility is drastically low to the point that I'm very confident that he will be traded. I think they're going to have to force their hand in trading him, I'm just worried that a team like the Bears will have much more appealing offer with higher picks then us and he would be fine playing there. While I believe that was the original intention, I think Landry not finding the offers that he wants reopens that possibility of him staying long-term. Is it slim? Absolutely. I think that relationship is broken and those two sides need to part ways. However, I can't completely dismiss the idea that maybe both sides suck it up and find common ground in the form of a new contract. At this point, what does Miami have to lose? Probably not great draft compensation now that the 2019 comp pick is pretty much off the table.
My point was always that they are currently over the cap and can no longer rescind the tag on Landry so even if they are trading him away they are gonna have to make cuts and restructures to fit him under the cap by Wednesday whatever happens

But then, you have reports like this:

Eyes around league looking at Dolphins handling Jarvis Landry's contract situation w/ intrigue. Heard from 1 Exec "Tannenbaum screwed up. And I doubt Ozzie (Ravens) or Dors (Browns) will bail him out. That's a real $16M on his cap. No accounting tricks change it."
Well yes, they can't rescind the tag, but him signing it was necessary in order to trade him and get compensation for him. I think it will be unaffected by Wednesday. There's nothing really that special about Wednesday outside of the fact that it's the day FA can officially sign their deals, but the negotiating process undergoes prior to that. They will have everything figured out by then. If this move effected that process then I doubt they would've done it in the first place. The moment that 4:00PM hits on Wednesday he's gone from their cap if he's traded, so I just don't see how that matters.

I don't know, I mean that's the opinion of an exec but I feel good about our chances of landing him.
I think it's smart to wait it out. With each passing day there's more pressure on them to trade him. They're going to have to accept a low pick for him eventually and that's what I think they'll end up with because I highly doubt they take that 16M with them.
Tenenbaum was an idiot with the Jets as well. No surprises hereWhich is what hurt them from the outset - every other club knew they couldn’t afford to retain him at that price and Landry and his camp knew they didn’t want a long term deal with the dolphins
This tbh is what I almost expected to happen but didn’t think tenenbaum would be such an idiot
This was a game of chicken but tenenbaum refused to back away and so in stead has crashed
