tonally that sounds like these surgeries are more about quality of life after retirement types of things though

All roads to him landing on PUP, either never coming off or eventually ending up on IR, collecting his $2M for the year, then probably retiring next offseason.

that's exactly where i think this is going - he's never gonna be medically cleared

only thing would be if wolfe decides he doesnt even want to pretend to be rehabbing and getting into football shape and just decides to retire especially if these are quality of life surgeries (apparently it's a hip impingement which does actually have a good return-to-sport rate)

there's no doubt in my mind he's gone next offseason, the only question is whether he makes any attempt to play in 2022

Right but I assume he knows that retirement means he forfeits $2M. Probably not the best decision...

sure which is why i think he sticks it out
but it's also tough to rehab an injury when you know in your heart that your playing days are over - that grind is tough

Agreed. Obviously not knowing nearly enough about the injury and recovery time, one would suspect he'd probably be looking at 2-3 months just to get back on the field. Let alone in game/playing shape.

Basically gets the JuWuan James treatment for the year.

think hip impingement is like 3-6 months before you can do sport (not sure if that's contact stuff too)
but idk whether this being a 2nd cleanup type surgery makes a difference to the recovery time

and at this point idk if the ravens care - unlike ja'wuan james, there's no prospect of him playing for the ravens in 2023... even if he decides he's going to keep playing, the ravens will just cut him then

james probably has the inside track on the 9th OL spot on the 53 as long as he has a healthy offseason
 
A real shame whatever is going on with Wolfe. He played some good ball for us on that 1 year deal. Turned it into a well deserved extension and then the injuries hit. A weird situation all around and I'd be hard pressed to believe that he's playing for the Ravens again, and probably not even for anyone again. Just seems like he knows his reality and what it would take to get back, and those other interests (aka hunting) are taking precedence. But for now, he's gonna sit back and collect that $2M guaranteed. He ain't playing anyways.

If they could get out of it right now, they would. They just can't. Him still being on the roster has nothing to do with their belief in him.

Well, the truth is, that might not have mattered. Would have depended on his status in March. If he couldn't pass a physical in March, it's irrelevant whether they thought he could come back or not, because the franchises hands are tied.

IF he would have cleared a physical in March, which I doubt he would, then yes, it's a $2M bad decision by the FO to think he could return. Based on the relationship between the parties, my assumption is that the Ravens have known pretty much the whole offseason that they got screwed a little bit on this one.

Having him on the roster probably keeps him covered by team/nfl insurance, and gives him access to basically the top doctors in the US. It's not super common but I've seen other teams do this for vets when they're injured at the end of their career. It's essentially just a show of respect and a thank you from the team.
