The Offensive Line Thread

I get that it's about time to start drafting Yandas replacement (maybe one more year if not this one), but barring a disappointing showing from Jensen you are mostly looking at addong depth except for RT.

Stanley, Lewis, and Yanda are for sure starting. Jensen as well could keep the job of he puts it together so maybe you look for a replacement RT in the draft, but beyond that you are drafting depth players.
I'm not certain, but based on Lewis last season and hurst in preseason, I'd take hurst at RT over Lewis at LG. I would draft Quentin Nelson being that he's an unequestioned blue chip guard and there are no options of his caliber for RT, assuming of course that we are light years away from mcglinchey.

Not to mention we are a good LG away from kicking Lewis out to RT anyway, Nelson/Jensen/yanda is a fucking monstrous interior. I'd take that group over 2 half ass solutions to LG and RT that we got by reaching in the draft and dumpster diving in FA like you're implying

We would probably have to tank for Nelson

If we're not gonna compete for a championship then y not. The goal is to be the best. Not try to win a couple xtra games which is equivalent to spinning your wheels. Sometimes you have to go backwards to get out of a rut b4 getting in gear accelerating and coasting!!

Tanking just doesn't work in the NFL. It's not like other sports where a top prospect can rebuild your entire career. Player lives are too short. Sure, tank for Nelson. We lose the prime of Cj Mosely, Flacco, Suggs and Yanda Completely, Jimmy ect. And what if the player we tank for isn't good? This team is good enough to make the playoffs. No way we should tank.

Nah, nelsons still a guard, realistically we should be in the 18-24 range, and even a blue chip guard could see himself fall in that range. Guys like Zack Martin are the exception and not the rule. Centers and LTs fly off the board but guards not so much.

Now I'm not writing off at all, say the rams shock the world and end up picking 10-12, they have been putting together some pieces and a guy like Nelson would be a massive boost to get their offense going, Jacksonville, cinci, colts, all could take a guy like Nelson early, but I think it's unlikely, as most would probably take a lesser OT before a superior guard.

Chance Warmack and Jonathan Cooper.

If we were to, "tank" speaking hypothetically I wouldn't expect to do so for a guard. May as well go full out tank and get a quarterback.

Brandon Scherff?

Thats who he reminds me of, and Decastro.

As for tanking? Well I said that as a joke, unless youre a hapless team with no QB then you dont tank, thats one way to lose fans then lose you team to another city, and what if the guy is a bust? I disagreed when the old board swore that Chance Warmack was the real deal and now look at him, on another teams bench. Scherff and Decastro took a few years to make an impact too.

With Scherff, the skins started using him at RT before moving him inside. Last year, which was his second year he had a good year. I still say to this day they should have drafted Leonard Williams.

That's been my opinion as well. Everyone would have taken Williams in their stead. They had (and still have) a big need for a pass rusher inside, and they had a chance to get a dominant guy at the position, a perennial Pro Bowler who was widely considered the Best Player in the draft. It was the best case of need meets value that I can remember.

I like to listen to the word choice used when the coaches talk about people. Not the specific words in question because the coaches will always talk up players doing poorly, down players doing well and occasionally mix this up for certain players who I assume perform either better or worse with a fire lit under them.

However the way in which they talk about Alex Lewis almost reminds me exactly of how they used to talk about KO before he broke out, Its like they know something the rest of us dont and since the last time they said that they were right I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

I disagree. KO was a far better prospect than lewis and an athletic freak. His play in his rookie year while not elite was considerably better than a.lewis.

I'm not familiar with how the coaches talked up KO. Were they talking him up despite playing average at best as a RT for the whole regular season?

They talked him up a lot even after that. I remember thinking at the time "Do they know something the rest of us don't because he looked meh at best?"

After he put it together I started paying much closer attention to how they talk up people and the phrasing used to tell me what they know that we don't.

Still not the norm though I wouldn't say.

Scherff was drafted to play OT but hasn't lived up to it at that position.
I think everyone had the expectation of Scherff kicking inside.

If you can get an elite OL player, take them regardless of position.

Homestly the only positions i would take off the board in the 1st 3 rounds are DL CB and QB. If you think there is talent at any other position you pull the trigger.

If we are picking at 18 for some reason and one of Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, or Sam Darnold falls to us somehow and we don't take him Ozzie should be fired ASAP. Sorry. All three are potential franchise guys and Flacco is getting older and QB is by far the most important position on the team. Likewise, if Flacco plays bad this season it's likely we start looking for different options.
