I’m ok with admitting I’m not completely sold on Lamar being the long term QB in Baltimore. I’d say I’m 80/20 is vs isn’t. I just think the risk/reward of waiting one more year and allowing him to play on the 5th year option is worth it.
If Lamar wins a super bowl than great , bite the bullet pay him Mahomes money. If he maintains his currently trajectory , great pay him a little more than we would have anyways this off-season. If he continues this odd slump and somehow regresses further, great bullet dodged, franchise him or move on.

So here’s the rebuttal to that, if we don’t pay Lamar, the other option is scrap it all and rebuild and hope we find a franchise qb, and that is never a given, the browns took baker mayfield first overall and he ain’t about shit, and Sam darnold was considered by many the superior prospect but he’s been horrible. Franchise qbs don’t just grow on trees, neither do strong rosters.
we have a qb that has never been seen before and will likely never be seen again, there will never be another Lamar Jackson, he is quite literally the first and possibly only of his kind, and he’s a raven, and I can’t entertain the thought for even half a second that we do anything but secure him until his wheels fall off. Cap be damned, you keep a player like that on your team.

Bucky Brooks would be smiling at some of these posts. Let me piggyback off this. I'm on record saying that I don't know if we win another game this season for two reasons: 1) massive ass concerns about this offense and 2) our defense getting worse with Marlon out AND the offenses that we're going up against (and yes, I'm including the Browns because I don't think Landry has had less than a decent game against us). Despite saying this, I'm not even hesitating to pay Lamar if I'm EDC.

Like, if Lamar fails under a big contract, that sucks, but you see it through, you absolutely have to, because it is so incredibly rare to have a player of this caliber, you don’t let those guys go. Like you don’t let Ed reeds go, you don’t let ray lewises go, you don’t let Lamar Jacksons go. There’s the 80/20 rule, then there’s once in a lifetime players where it doesn’t matter what the potential downside is, you see it through.
in the sense that he's feeling the weight of the offence and the weight of the pass rush then i agree with you somewhat
i would say he's more doubting himself than seeing ghosts - he's not pulling the trigger because he's 2nd guessing what he's seeing because he's been burned at times - he's been burned when trying to hold on and make plays, he's been burned in the quick game too - so now he's started doubting himself and double-clutching but he doesn't trust his OL so his head is dropping early
those elements are compounding to create this mess
and i think all it will take is a 2-3 game stretch without a pick to see lamar get back into some sort of form again
that's the thing - im all for responsible pragmatism but we've got a legit MVP winning player on this team for the first time in franchise history - how could we ever possibly not see this through...
you 100% have to see this through to the end - and if that's in a decade+ then great... and if it happens to be that the wheels fall off and we end up stuck for a little bit then... that's fine because that's just the nature of the thing
and especially when you see continued improvement and elite traits
at that point the question becomes... if lamar's not good enough to deserve it then what sort of talent possibly could/would be other than mahomes
nobody seems to have any issues paying mahomes or allen or dak or watson and my guess is that no one will put up a fight when it comes around to being kyler or herbert or burrow
6 of the 8 divisions of the NFL right now are being led by teams with the cream of the crop at QB, the only 2 that aren't are the AFC South where there isnt an elite qb in the division and the AFC East because the Patriots are the Patriots
the next 3 seeds in the AFC all have those young high quality QBs too - Allen, Herbert and Burrow
and the NFC wildcard race is a mess right now partly because there's not so many young QBs coming through in that conference
when you find a QB like this - you hold on for dear life until you can't anymore
only recent team i can think of that has given up a potential franchise QB is the eagles - and idk but I think Wentz is already proving them wrong for that - that being said they might have 3 1st round picks in the 2022 nfl draft so maybe they wont be that worried lol
cant live with the what ifs with a talent like lamar
you pay him, build around him and live/thrive with whatever comes out of it

Classic recency bias. Has a few bad games and now he's trending down. I'm going to look at his body of work and the current state of our line and run game and say his current performance is not reflective of his future potential output. We paid Flacco because he had 4 good games, not signing Lamar would be making the same mistake we made with Flacco in reverse.

That’s completely fair, but you won’t need to do a full rebuild if Lamar maintains his current trajectory. We would just pay him a little more next year than we would have this year, while also confirming his recent short comings were an anomaly . The only way we go rebuild is Lamar suffers a major injury or he goes full regression next year. And even then we have the less than ideal franchise tag in case of emergency.
I just like having options , even if it cost Steve a little extra in the long run. Always nice gambling when it’s not your money on the line lol.

I think it’s an age thing as well. People forget he is only 24. I don’t know about you guys but I was way more stubborn and impatient in my early 20s. Combine that with his competitiveness and your going to see way to much of Lamar forcing the issue to save the season.
As tough as it’s been to watch him this past month, this season could be key in his development as he gets older

Lamar’s a beast and on his way to the greatest Ravens Qb, but Flacco won a ton of games early in his career , just as Lamar has. His regression didn’t start until injury.
