Ravens Ring of Honor
Not really a relevant comparison though.Oh, trust me. I know what the salary cap does and how it benefits the league. However, why are we always trying to dissuade players from making big coin? After all, they are the ones that generate the interest and money. All I'm saying is increase the damn cap to favor players 60-40 instead of an even split. That should accommodate all the big guaranteed salaries. Why is it wrong? Each year the NFL franchises keep going up in value by 100s of millions. Every single year and this is on top of their normal profit-sharing of the TV and gate revenues. The reversionary interest in franchise value alone is so lopsided on the owners' side, that I think we don't need to call out players who try to wring the owners' arms to make their own money. That's all.
PS: Also, my kid's money is at stake here too. So, there is that.
Why does NFL team value matter? It's not tangible. It has no meaning until an owner actually sells the team. They can't buy anything or contribute to GDP or any other economic factor with "my franchise is worth X". Can't buy anything with that. You buy things and create value with currency transactions.
It's the same concept as trying to tax the wealthy on "net worth". It's an elite-level bad idea that has gigantic gaping holes that could never be filled.
It's a pretty simple reason why the public generally sides with the Owners... because fans don't care about the business side of sports. We don't care about how much Owners make, the worth of a team, etc. Fans view it as entertainment. Are you entertaining me, and is my team winning? Everything else after that is irrelevant.
And individual players getting paid large sums of money, in a sport that has a collectively bargained agreement to cap what players can make, generally speaking, decreases the likelihood of a team being a winning team, thus impacting the fans entertainment value.
Putting a cap on profits or franchise worth doesn't impact either of those things.
Also, most people will never be millionaires. And those same people don't view Billionaires differently from Millionaires. There's rich people, and there's rich people. The magnitudes don't matter.
To a large segment of the population, Lamar Jackson is just as evil as Bisciotti, because they're both rich well beyond what the average person will ever make or see. It doesn't matter that Steve is massively more wealthy and rich than Lamar is.
