The 2023 Offseason Thread

Oh yeah? What if it's your guy Baker?
Qb play maybe eh, but The commercials will be funny atleast. And don’t you dare say they weren’t. Giving nacho cheese to kids for trick or treating was great

I take your point but I think my argument still stands. The Ravens approach to the WR position has been closer to the bare minimum than the heavy commitment Hensley's tweet suggests - especially when considering the starting point. ( It's always 2018 or 19 because the Ravens cupboard was so utterly bare that they had to do something.)

The Bateman and Brown picks were positive (though trading two cheap years of Hollywood away and failing to replace him does undermine that) but otherwise it has been the very cheapest FAs and picks in the 90s and beyond.
Was basically one cheap year for Hollywood. 2023 franchise tag value is north of $13M for him, which is closer to market value than it is "cheap".
Two first round WRs in four years is a pretty hefty investment. I'd have liked to have seen another 2nd rounder in there, but four in the first two days is also pretty significant.

Just haven't landed any FAs, because there normally aren't any. And the trade market is obviously ridiculously expensive.

I’m having a crisis trying to figure out what the hell the Hawks were thinking and why they would do that to their fans. Good on the man for a solid season , but Geno is never taking that team to the promise land. Saints and Hawks need accept the rebuild
Ehh, everybody getting all worked up over these two deals. Lets see what the details are.
My guess... Geno got no guaranteed $ after year one, and it'll be incentive-heavy also.

We already know Carr's deal is basically a two year, $70M deal.

So like yeah, these guys AAV's look decent on paper, but neither team made any serious financial commitment long term to either player.

Both those guys could be on other teams by 2025 if they don't play well.

They simply aren't in a position for anyone better. It's either ride with Geno for a couple years or trade the farm for the one QB in this draft that looks like a safe pick for a franchise guy (Stroud).

Also let's not forget that the Ravens nearly beat the Bengals in the playoffs with Huntley at QB. The Hawks could use the extra picks to really retool that defense for a similar strategy.

To quote the greatest movie of all time
, Gladiator. “People should know when they’ve been conquered”

The structure of the deals is irrelevant to me. Geno and Carr both add enough wins to keep these teams competitive , but neither roster is good enough for a Super Bowl run. Why torture yourself an delay the inevitable? Hit the rebuild hard , fix the cap, and position yourself to grab a talented young QB in the draft. Sucks from a fan perspective this year, but it’s a necessary evil to avoid going 9-8, loosing both guys in 2025, and still not being in a position to draft a young Qb.

Well I mean they're both good enough to get 5 good years out of them if they play well.
Saints with Carr and a few upgrades are easily a top 3-4 team in the NFC. At least on the par with like the Cowboys.

I'm not a huge fan in Geno or the Seahawks roster, but I get why they'd rather give Geno another year or two to see if he's good enough to win with.
Plus I don't see any reason why Geno's deal would prevent Seattle from taking a QB early in the draft either. Especially if its somebody like Richardson, who's viewed as more developmental.

Another reason not to overreact to AAV with QB contracts...

  • GENO SMITHQB, SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
    smith

NFL Network's Mike Garofolo reports Geno Smith's three-year contract extension includes $40 million guaranteed.

Smith, per Garofolo, will make $28 million in the first year of the new deal, with $75 million over three seasons. He'll have $30 million in incentives. Smith on Monday agreed to the extension after his impressive 2022 season. He threw for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns, and led the Seahawks to a wildcard berth in 2022. Entering his age-33 season, Smith seems to have a locked-in starting job for at least 2023. He could be a longer term option if the Seahawks pass on a quarterback in the first round of the 2023 draft.

Makes $28M next year, and nearly 30% of his deal is incentive-based.
It's a 3 year, $75M deal, with a bunch of incentives.

I think the real test is going to be if Giants cave and give Daniel Jones $45M+ a year. He isn't worth that, surprised Giants aren't moving on from him. Either way, these next 6 hours are going to be torture on our refresh button lol.

Some teams construct their roster to be super bowl caliber. Other teams want to just make it to the big dance (wildcard.. then hope to get lucky). ..Like us

RapSheet was on McAfee's show and said he sees no team willing to commit to Lamar by giving up 2 first round picks which would be why we use the non-exclusive tag.

Scott, Lasley, Hollywood, Boykin, Duv, Proche, Wallace and Bateman. Lamar was technically on the team before the 1st 2.
I was taking it since 2018, not including. If it's including that that is correct. We had big misses on Scott and Lasley both of which were late picks. Still only 2 of the 8 were taking above the 3rd round and Hollywood was a success and fetched us a 1st round pick in trade. Bateman has serious talent when he's on the field.

Seahawks have talent

Everyone has talent, doesn’t make them a legitimate Super Bowl contender
Also doesn't mean a team is going to tank just because they're not a SB contender.
Tanking for some teams means losing lots of $ and fans.

Saints are a great example. I've been saying they should have tanked for a few years now. Also talked to a couple beat writers in that area, and they basically said if the Saints went on like a 3-5 year "rebuild", there's a decent chance they'd lose the franchise in New Orleans. Like literally. When that team has historically been terrible, nobody shows up.

There's a reason why they haven't taken a first round QB in like 50 years or whatever.

Plus, if I'm Seattle, who am I afraid of in the NFC? Cardinals will be without Murray for at least half the year, Rams appear to be trading away a ton of guys, 49ers essentially don't have a QB at the moment.
Elsewhere, Rodgers may be gone, the NFC South is still in shambles and is likely, at best, to have a bunch of rookie QBs.

From a "how they stack up in their own conference" standpoint, Seattle is basically in similar spot as the Ravens, Chargers, Jags are right now. They're not as good as the best teams, but they're probably good enough to beat them periodically.

Honestly not even sure why they're playing the game with him. He's like the easiest franchise tag candidate I've ever seen. $31M is below market value, but reasonable enough, and you get a whole new year to evaluate before committing long term.

If you can get him on the Geno/Carr deal, sure. If he holds out for more, FT him, and let him play it out on that.
