The AJ Green, the Joe Flacco, and the Defense- Week 2 Edition

Other than some random poor plays by some this game was ultimately lost at the LOS. No pass pro. Flacco was consistently harrased and hit and when he wasn’t there were arms, hands and helmets in passing lanes. Terrible O line play and great scheming by the Bengals. No pass rush. Dalton consistently had a clean pocket and open throwing lanes, don’t think he was ever touched. Great adjustments on D in the second half that were aided by some poor play by the Bengals and some suspect play calls on their part.

Couple of thoughts.......Siz disappeared in this one. Either he was nicked and we didn’t know or he’s seriously showing his age.
Crabtree sucked. Dropped passes, pulling up on routes, falling down before contact, etc.. When the pass hit him in the face mask I almost lost it. Hopefully he just had a bad game.

Please, please can the gimmick plays with Lamar. They serve no purpose other than to rob momentum and ruin any flow and rhythm the O might be trying to gain. They make the team look like a desperate loser searching for a way to win.
Come on man. After 5 years and $120-something million bucks, it's time to stop with excuses for every piss poor game, and there were a lot of those, he plays - don't you think?

Also not sure I saw this mentioned but Grant may need to go. I’m nervous when he’s back there. I’m not sure if we need to cut him but he makes me real nervous

I will say I disagree with one thing. I don’t think our run defense was bad nor do I think Brandon Williams was bad. Williams has never been the best pass rusher he offers a little there but not much his value is keeping guys clean and I know it was live but it seemed like he helped guys like Kenny Young stay clean to make some of those plays. Outside of that one Mixon run I thought we played Mixon very well. We got lit up against the pass that’s why we lost, which makes sense due to Onuwasor coming in for Mosley. That was idiotic to have him making the calls and I hope Kenny Young is learning right now how to make those calls

The run defense wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. The numbers may not look that impressive from the Bengals, but they were consistently picking up 3-4 YPC to put them in manageable third downs. I don't think this would have happened with CJ in the game, but it wasn't a great performance up to their usual standards.

typical week 2 effort by the ravens. regroup and beat the broncos which will not be easy. please stop going for it on 4th down at the 50 yard line harbs when you know the o-line is struggling. kenny young looks like a star in the making. running game must get better. o-line must get better. dropped passes again have hurt. i like that flacco is spreading the ball around and please please stop with the gimmick crap. it takes joe out of his rhythm and it has been unsuccessful thus far. lamar will get his chance down the road so let flacco lead the offense until than. defense had a terrible 1st half and struggled getting pressure. just a bad overall performance by the team. grateful c.j. will be ok and go chiefs!!!

Yeah I think it’s because of losing Mosley. I also don’t think we were that bad though because I don’t remember them getting their yards through the middle but IIRC it was on the edge where we lost contain or at LB due to guys not keying in on them. I think the DL played well in that regard it’s just pass rush was bad. Urban was a bright spot

here is my problem with all this
the bengals were without vontaze and brown. Their two VERY good ILBS.

How did penaut get this job in the first place? We havent had an UDFA ILB that's actually really good since bart scott. Ellerbe was decent but not great. Orr was overrated as hell but better than peanut. Why do we think UDFA's are fine at ILB?

We drafted Kenny Young, a 4th round pick, to play ILB. Burfict was an UDFA, and before you retort he was still ultimately undrafted. I hear you but if your argument is UDFA then that’s not a big deal as long as they are good

My thoughts as a whole...

  • WTF on that first throw by Joe. Awful read and totally took the bait. He occasionally always has those "WTF" moments and this was one of them.
  • Bobby Hart is so bad that the Bengals really might go out there and replace him with another FA RT. Not to mention that Westerman struggled bad against the Colts, add to the fact that the Price was out and the DL overall should've had a field day. It's rediculous how open running lanes were and how little pressure we were able to get. The Colts were able to handilly win the match up against the Bengals OL last week and we EASILY have a better DL.
  • Buck and Collins are effective passing options. I really think they're actually good backs just can't find any lanes to work with. The Collins ordeal is frustrating because there are times where you put the ball in the guys hands and he will make plays for you. The OL needs to give him a chance. We need to get Buck involved on a better variety of routes because he can easily win his match ups against a LB and has the potential to be one of the great pass catching backs.
  • I thought Boyle was put in a few poor situations. You're asking a TE to block Carlos Dunlap 1v1...Many tackles can't do that alone so what makes you think a TE can for more then 2 seconds?
  • I don't think the safeties played horrible at all. I think we lost this game more on the trenches and struggled badly there. Add in the miscommunications issue with Peanut and I personally think the secondary overall wasn't too awful. I'm really upset at how Tavon Young preformed because he was awful, obviously he didn't do well against A.J one on one but he had a lot of issues even against Boyd.
  • It was a mixed bag for Joe IMO. He had some really good plays when he was getting dragged down to the floor and put throws on the money. That TD to Andrews was a great play by him as well as he was on the run from immediate pressure by Dunlap and delivered a perfect throw. There was plenty of bad to go along with it. When he had a clean pocket he missed a ton of throws. Some were off the mark and let's not forget that god awful INT. The 2nd one I can't get too mad at since he was hit as he threw but he needs to be more accurate with his throws next time when the pocket is clean.
  • John Brown is a stud, he has to stick around. I hope we extend him because the guy can play. By far our best WR since Steve Smith Sr. and it's not even close.
  • The OL was the worst unit on this day. No running lanes were open and I do think the Bengals were playing against the run, but they were an abomination in pass protection. Gino Atkins had himself a DAY with 9 total pressures...NINE to go along with two sacks. Add in Dunlap, Williams and Hubbard and you can honestly say that the Bengals DL flat out dominated and destroyed this OL. Flat out worked them. I think this is one of the worst OL performances I've seen since 2013 given the amount of batted passes, blown up run plays, pressures, sacks and QB hits on the day.
  • That said, we're going to have a good receiving group ( Finally) unfortunately it's going to come with a caveat and thats the OL not playing up to expectations.
  • Lastly, Kenny Young just needs to take over that ILB spot next to Mosley going forward. Guy was honestly our best defensive player that day and I see no reason for Peanut to start when Young is not only the better player but has a higher ceiling.

more than brandon williams gets a season.
I don't think we can ever rely on him to be a pass rushing force out there since that's not his job, but he just gets taken out of passing plays sometimes single handidly. He's always talked about wanted to add to his sack number and being more effective at getting to the QB, but atm I don't think he's ever going to evolve into that. He's always going to be a force against the run but we'll never really see much from him against the passing game. He's valuable when it comes to taking up blockers, double teams and being immovable against the run, but he clearly wasn't that yestuday.

ANother thing. We havent drafted an elite pass rusher since 2003.

I will no longer not admit this fully. Ray Lewis and Ed reed carried this team on many levels. harbaugh was just a cheerleader.
I said before the draft last year (2017) that Carl Lawson and TJ watt > Tyus Bowser Tim williams.
We (the FO) were un-enamored with either of those two players. Carl Lawson absolutely fucked ronnie stanley yesterday and is younger than tim williams and better. Tim Williams has potential but he's been shelved for a very unimpressive matt judon who overrates himself a lot.

This coaching staff needs to..
start Orlando Brown jr and bench hurst
Start Tim williams
Think about trading brandon williams at some point next year ( if anyones dumb enough to touch him).

Judon has been VERY underwhelming to start the year. He really needs to step up if we want any resemblance of a pass rush.

Tim Williams needs more pass rushing snaps. And what is going on with Bowser? As a second round pick in his second year he should be getting a large snap count. We need guys to step tf up I’m really tired of seemingly every team in the NFL having a better pass rush than us.

The bengals took advantage of CJ being out and turned to quick passes in the middle of the field. Which is one excuse for lack of pass rush. However, going an entire game with like 3 QB hits is absolutely inexcusable. There’s no reason to be that bad. Especially with their shitty Oline.

You guys will beat Denver next week. Playing another game after 4 days rest is tough.

The Bengals had to play on 4 days rest as well. Inexcusable my brother!

I do remember you saying that and i been following carl lawson ever since

I feel like the pass-rushing rotation was pretty bad last night. Judon seemed to be in for most of the game despite being very ineffective. He's gonna have to pick it up if he still wants that sack record....

That contract was bad when Williams signed it and got even worse after 2 restructures. We can't cut or trade Williams before the 2020 season.
Harbs always mentions that he wants to play the best OL combination, but Skura is still the starting C and Hurst the Rt.
I don't know what causes Stanley to regularly not finish games. It seems every other game he's injured.
Judon needs to step talking and start getting some pressures.
Those gimmick plays need to stop. They're called gimmick for a reason - you don't call those often especially if they're not working.

I really don’t understand why everyone has such a problem with the Lamar plays. Collins had a nice run in that package solely because of the threat of Lamar. It adds another dimension to the offense that the defense has to think about.

There are 100 reasons to complain about last game and you guys pick something to bitch about that we run 5 times a game? Shut the fuck up.

We are using Lamar in gimmick stuff. It needs to end. Do I have a reason?

No.......
