The Lamar, the Receivers, and the Pass Defence

Roquan's presser was interesting. Highly alluded to the fact that our DBs are playing like shit and need to win their 1 on 1 matchups.
If you 1v1s are 2 of the top 10 WRs in football you should not be expected to win those. Humphrey can sure but I dont think anyone else is, or should be expected to be, on that level.

I feel privileged to have attended the first ever Ravens Bengals shootout. I need to watch highlights I am still having a hard time processing whatever the hell I just watched. I accepted a loss 3 different times, this feels like when they made us 0-3 back in 2015, we just didn’t go away, Lamar broke another narrative and played amazing coming from behind.

Yeah wide receiver is still an issue for this team, that's what I got from this game. We need playmakers like Chase & Higgins for Lamar. With that said....... go get Davante Adams!

Hmmm I don't think I got that from watching the game. Didn't seem like the wide receivers were struggling to get open or to make plays. I guess we feel like the receiver group needs more help cause it didn't look like the bengals receivers but I don't think thats fair criticism.

There were some missed throws from Lamar but for the most part I thought the receivers did pretty well and stepped up when needed

obviously if you could add someone like JJ or Chase to any offence then you would do that in a heartbeat - but in their case you'd also be adding someone that you know is gonna be a part of this offence for a long time

the rationale for bringing in davante is that he's another weapon for defences to worry about and he offers you ball skills on the boundary too and by pushing everyone else down the depth chart it makes the whole offence more dangerous

will be interested to see wallace and agholor's snap counts yesterday - feel like we're pretty thin at WR with Walker clearly a non-factor and Harty a specialist (and also not reliably healthy) - as much as playing 12 and 21 personnel is great, being able to play 11 when chasing the game is really crucial and having another guy you can rely on would make sense

that said, no complaints about the skill position guys from yesterday - they all did exactly what they needed to

Trey Hendrickson generated seven pressures on 20 pass rush matchups against Ravens left tackle Ronnie Stanley (35.0% pressure rate), the second-most pressures Stanley has allowed to a single player in his career per ESPN
Was coming to ask what happened on the play where he tried to help Lamar up? Think I missed something but Lamar completely ignored him when he offered his hand.

hendrickson has been doing that to every LT this year
also i wonder if that number will come down - bengals sent extra rushers a ton and i wonder if he got some extras charted to him

Something is wrong. If you're putting the defense where they're giving Jamar Chase in particular a lot of 1 on 1s, that's probably awful coaching.

The players can only say we need to play better, but since the Raiders game it's been so obvious Orr has made the defense's job harder not easier.

I firmly think the Ravens were overblitzing for that Raiders game, and the Cowboys game, and that tends to not work later in the game when the offense goes hurry up.

That being said you cant double Higgins and Chase on every play. That carries its own very high risk. Chase and Higgins though combined for over 60% of the Bengals total offense and that seems to be their recipe. I have no idea how one shuts them down and it seems like, after week 2 every single year, no one else really has a great plan for it either beyond "hope one of those 3 are hurt or having an off day".

Relatedly I feel like the Bengals might want to consider firing Taylor. The fact that the Bengals are so consistently terrible on offense the first 2 weeks of the year just has to fall on coaching at some point. I cant remember who linked it but someone linked me something that showed the Bengals as 1-9 in their first 2 games over the past 5 years. That is just unbelievably bad and at some point I would question why the coaches cant get the team able to play until week 3 because it seems like now they are in a big hole. Unfortunately they can very much get out of it over the next month but it just is insane that they fail so miserably every single year weeks 1 and 2.

So how does Orr baffle Buffalo and than get friggin scorched by Cincy ?

Yeah I'm not gonna get all that down on a defense that dominated Buffalo for 4 qtrs just last week. We know they are still going through growing pains from all the brain drain on that side, early in the year its hard to find consistency and they that was a desperate Joe Burrow in his house who was playing out of his mind. yeah we gave up way too many easy ones, but he drilled plenty of tough ones too. It felt like Ravens D was psychologically demoralized for about 3 qtrs of that game but then regrouped at the end.

We also need to remember that Orr's first 5 game have included Mahomes, Allen and Burrow. It will get easier.

MM did it multiple times. It's possible. We should rewatch some of them.

I gotta say I’m pretty concerned about Orr as DC. There’s just too much miscommunication going on.
I really wanted to keep MacDonald as assistant head coach and DC and eventual head coach but I guess Harbs isn’t ready to retire.

We had our pick of the litter with those D assistants and we picked Orr. The others had more experience so I'm guessing ravens felt Orr was the better long play, the most talented. We've played the best qb's in the league through first 5 weeks, most of the key players are playing well or rounding into shape.

With a different group of people on both sides of the ball. Humphrey is a year older and Stephens has clearly regressed. Wiggins is still a rookie dealing with rookie issues, but does show flashes.

Random thought while clicking through the box scores this would be the 7th time the Ravens have played the Bengals since Chase was drafted. Going off box score and injury notes, Chase dominated the first one, Higgins dominated the 2nd matchup, Higgins didnt play the 3rd, Chase was okay in the 4th and Higgins was largely in check (though the Bengals won by 11 and I repressed Anthony Brown playing QB so I hope you allow me to not dig deeper into why), which brings us to last year when Burrow was hurt both games, and Higgins seems to have been hurt as well for the 2nd game.

Basically since Chase's rookie year when both of them had a dominant game, they have not really had a game where all 3 have been healthy and on the field, until yesterday, and even then its a different roster. Maybe they could look at the tape from that Anthony Brown game but that is about the closest thing to a successful example I could find and it is quite literally the only game where all 3 played healthy and one didnt dominate.

The Bengals are healthy and humming with Burrow, Chase, higgins and all that investment in the Oline is finally paying off with a solid unit. This is one of if not the most explosive team in football when they got that going. I'm taking the road dub and won't anger the football gods with quibbles. We're lucky that defense is so bad and it's nice to see them in the hole at 1-4, but would anybody be surprised if those guys rattle off an 8-2 over the next 10?
