The Bad, The Ugly, and the Pathetic

For me, Clowney was never in play. Why? Simple... we couldn't afford him. At the time he was available to acquire via trade, we quite literally didn't have the cap space to sign him, because carrying a huge franchise tag number like his is problematic for a team like ours. And once July 15th hit, you can't extend him anyway, so you're stock with that monstrosity of a cap hit.

The cost of trading for Clowney and his contract would have required us to cut or trade Jimmy Smith. That was the only way that was ever going to be done.

I wouldn't have done that then, and I certainly wouldn't have done that now.
Clowney wanted to go to either the Eagles or Seahawks and Clowney was in full control of that trade. That being said, I totally agree with you regarding the July 15th deadline. Pretty much ruled out a majority of the league at that point.

Humphrey, upon further inspection made quite a few mistakes in this game. He busted a coverage for the first touchdown.

Humphrey is a very good man corner but i don't think his football IQ is off the charts or anything
Humphrey himself said he screwed up on this but he locked down OBJ. He's a damn good man corner. One of the better corners in this league and he's still above average as a zone corner, but it isn't his strength.

Call me crazy while everyone here is shitting the bed but i still think we should win this division. I think were better overall than the Browns and that will show over time.

The secondary should be able to fix their problems and with Lamar well always be in games and scoring points.

Offense just needs to mesh and defense needs to clean up mental lapses and tackling. Something that seems fixable

Our front 7 however, is something im not sure can be fixed. Teams will be able to run the ball on the edges vs us with ease all season. We have no edge setters, pass rushers, or linebackers that can shed blocks. And its a problem

We arent better than the browns. Never was. Probably looked better but i dnt believe we were ever better than them..they have a nice team all around other than oline, yet we still managed to
Only get one sack.

Considering the trenches are where the games are won, I don't have high hopes.

If this is true. I stand corrected. that looked very much like a man assignment vs Beckham as opposed to a zone assignment for Humphrey.

He said Seal Jones was his assignment on the 59 yard play. I'll see if I can find it.

this is from br.com
Humphrey took the blame for one of the coverage busts, seemingly the one to Seals-Jones, saying he did well in man-to-man coverage but wasn’t good in different zone coverages.

We spend 32% of the cap on secondary players (ranked 1st) and we're ranked 29th in pass defense. lmao! Our pass rush is questionable, but that's inexcusable. Harbaugh said Defense is overplaying zone coverages. Doesn’t think it’s a matter of defense being complicated. Thinks guys are overplaying coverages rather then just doing their jobs.
We're paying guys top dollars who can't even do their jobs.

Really? that play was on Marlon?? I can't remember seeing any sort of read of the #1 where he is essentially a half field player of #2....that is very very odd to me.

I remember bruce arians ( then of arizona) being surprised about how much we offered jefferson and thought we overpaid for what we were getting

he was right

2 of those guys are hurt. Martindale is just making too many complicated calls on defense. We don’t have communication at the level we did last year. We have the talent to stick to cover 3 and cover 1. I don’t like the fact that Martindale is asking Earl Thomas to creep into the box when he’s obviously a much better rangy safety. As for yesterday I would say we did an awful job of tackling. Guys were breaking tackles at an extreme rate.

Snap Breakdown

Lamar Jackson and the OL played all 69 snaps.

Tight end snaps breakdown

Hopefully Andrews is feeling more like himself this coming week as we need him to be on the field more often.

Also, for the third-straight game, Hurst’s snaps decreased.

  • Week 1 — 43 (tied for first with Boyle)
  • Week 2 — 33 (nine fewer snaps than second place)
  • Week 3 — 22 (21 fewer snaps than second place)
  • Week 4 — 15 (14 fewer snaps than second place)
If Andrews’ isn’t on the field, you’d expect Hurst to fill-in and make some plays. While he did have the second-most yards receiving yesterday (39), that’s not going to cut it.

Running back snaps breakdown
The running game, on its face, looks good. I’m surprised we aren’t seeing more rushing attempts here. Every ball-carrier is at or above 4.0 yards per carry. While I don’t want to see a total revival of Marty Mornhinweg’s scheme of, ‘run it until we have no choice but to pass,’ an offense better centered around the rushing attack and play-action could provide better value in the coming games.

Defense
Defensive 100%ers — Players who played all 69 defensive snaps

Not much to say here other than Humphrey is trying his damn best. Jimmy, get well soon.

Linebacker snaps breakdown
Bizarre to see Tim Williams snaps drop to single digits. He’s yet another player with decreasing snaps. Also, Ferguson suddenly usurps both Tyus and Tim in snaps.

Defensive backs snaps breakdown
Canady has officially jumped Averett on the depth chart and, honestly, he deserves it after yesterday. I’m still puzzled why Cyrus Jones doesn’t see snaps on the defensive side but maybe they like him for his special teams duties and don’t want him to suffer an injury elsewhere. I like that the Ravens are giving run with dime packages but they must make the coverage plays when they’re subbing out a linebacker for Levine, Clark or Elliott.

Defensive line snaps breakdown
Last year’s game with interior pressure causing mistakes from the opponent’s is gone. I’m not seeing Pierce produce pressure inside. Maybe the loss of Za’Darius Smith is affecting them. Either way, none of these four are really making big moves.

I don’t remember Pierce ever getting consistent interior pressure. We really need an upgrade at the D tackle positions. We’re playing 1990s football with only run stopping D tackles, no pass rush whatsoever.

Chris Jones should be the guy we target as a PRIORITY in FA
he's not going to hit free agency

Great of you to jump on the bandwagon after he becomes a stud. You never want to play the forum mock. Chris Jones was my pick in the Forum Mock and he is a stud, but to think he hits free agency is crazy.
