2022 General Draft Thoughts

Ravens Ring of Honor
walker's a projection based on traits and tools and flashes - the reason his time to sack is so low is most likely almost entirely a product of the scheme he was in because most of the time he was making space for other defenders (mostly the LBs)

they built an impressive team defence in georgia but i wouldnt say it was the best for letting some of these guys show off their traits as pass rushers (same issues with Jordan Davis and even Devonte Wyatt too)

Jermaine Johnson is probably the big takeaway there for me - and it kind of makes sense too... senior bowl did a lot for him in terms of the progress he'd made even between the end of the season and the all-star games - but definitely he's the one that i would look at and maybe go back to the eval to have another look just to check im still comfortable with my thoughts (which i think i aim with him)

the Ebiketie, Mafe and Hutchinson numbers (and Bonitto to an extent too) numbers are eye-opening in a positive way (if your eyes werent already opened to them)
Yeah sure. I didn't want to put much weight on the positive numbers of Ebiketie, Hutch and Mafe because I just don't know how high their double team rates are.

I was really disappointed how low Walker's rate is - I expected it to be better albeit not as high as others. Generally speaking Walker should have had it easier because of the unbelievable amount of talent Georgia had on defense.

I'd REALLY like a corner in RD1 because I know there's gonna be an edge RD2. It's just so crazy though. I wonder if when all is said and done if someone like Karlaftis or Ebiketie actually ends up being the best pro
Do you think Stingley or McDuffie will be available when we pick?

i think the ceiling's on those guys means it's unlikely they end up the best just because they have some physical limitations (ebiketie with his size and anchor, karlaftis with his stiffness and short arms) - but it's definitely possible that they're 2 of the better rookies and can carve out long careers while guys ahead of them bust or dont hit their potential

but it's hard to expect those guys to become the best when all it takes is one of the crazy athletes in this class to hit (and there's a lot of options lol) and they dont stand a chance...
Travon Walker's a freak athlete
Boye Mafe's a freak athlete
Drake Jackson's nearly a freak athlete
Josh Paschal's nearly a freak athlete
David Ojabo's nearly a freak athlete
KT's got a couple of insane athletic gifts
Hutchinson's got a couple of elite athletic gifts

i definitely think the best way the draft could fall for us is to go 1st pick CB, 2nd pick EDGE to begin just with where the strengths of the class is

not sure about the double-team rates on ebiketie and mafe but anecdotally i can tell you that teams literally game-planned around not getting beaten by hutchinson both by using scheme and also by double and even triple teaming him

with walker it was never going to be that high though because there's almost no snaps where they let him actually be an outside pass rusher without a contain or run responsibility - georgia's scheme on passing downs is built around creating contain and getting free blitzes from LBs either from the edge or off-ball and getting pressures that way

watching walker, those numbers are exactly what you saw on tape... because of that context - and that's why walker is a bit of a risk because there's almost no reps you can soothe your doubts with because they dont exist - he's partly projection based on what you see in other aspects of his game (a lot of which is translatable)

Which is?

pin his hair back and rush the passer and attack in half-man relationships in 1v1 situations
had almost zero opportunities to rush the passer as the edge rusher
had only limited opportunities to rush the passer as a conventional 3t

spent so much time in a 4i being asked to spike inside as the pick player on stunts to occupy blockers/try and split double-teams to open up space for the late blitzing LBs and/or the looper

alternatively he was asked to be the contain player/QB spy

way too often was asked to rush as part of a 3 man front

in the NFL he's gonna get lined up on the edge over a tackle, or he's gonna get lined up at 3t and he'll get the opportunity to actually attack gaps rather than blockers

Georgia's defence in the passing game was built around their off-ball LBs not their defensive line

Yeah the 49ers could use a player like this since they don't have someone like this at all on their roster. Nope...

I'm the opposite. I see a lot more good corners throughout this draft than potentially elite edge rushers. We'll find corners that can contribute in the third and fourth round picks. Meanwhile there can easily be a rush on the top athletes among edge rushers and we'll be left with scraps with the second pick.
