Harbaugh was talking about trying Cleveland at RT, Sala at LG a little while ago. He talked about trying Fa'alele at G a while back too.I know it's only minicamps so we'll need to see how it progresses, but looks like Sala got the run with the 1s at LG today. Sounds like the competition is more likely him vs. John Simpson... aka Ben Cleveland might be toast.
I have to say I don't like the way they keep doing that, for a few reasons
- if players can perform at a starter level at one position, experiment all you like, but before that point, I'd rather they got them to a point where they can at least do one job well.
- Maybe it's my prejudice but I just don't think big RT body types fit very well at Guard. The only player across the whole NFL that I can think of who made that switch successfully is Roger Saffold, so it seems like it's a small target the Ravens keep trying to hit. The other type of Tackle to Guard conversion - that of a smaller guy with good technique who could play tackle at college (eg Yanda, Mekari) - seems to be much more successful.
- The attempt to switch positions seems even less likely to succeed when you look at the players the Ravens keep trying it with. Tyre Phillips, Sala, Fa'alele all have great Tackle bodies but the fact that the Ravens picked them on Day 3 (more or less) tells you that their technique didn't match up to their physique. If it had, they'd have been Day 1 or 2 players.
So why put them in a position where they can't get the maximum benefit from their frame and length, and where their height might even be a disadvantage? Isn't that taking away from their strengths (size) and putting more pressure onto their weaknesses?
