The 2023 Offseason Thread

I do wonder how “safe” Maulet is. Sounds like Ar’Darius is basically the one guy to have taken his opportunity and run with it. Knowing there are still a few slot options on the market, you wonder if Hamilton sliding up and Stone sliding in is a the better backup option from a roster construction standpoint. Maulet could even be a PS guy potentially.

Hard to say really. Certainly hasn't really done much, but has also only played 35 snaps total across the 2 games.

I will say this though: he has not popped off either against backups or low end starters. I do not think preseason success means you are going to be great, but a good player should look like he is simply better than everyone around him in the preseason. Zay Flowers looked simply better than those on defense. Travis Jones looked like a force. Justice Hill looked like he might be coming for the starting job. Ojabo just looked at best like he was okay. That does not mean he wont be good but does mean I do not expect him to pop off when the season starts, though Houston is pretty terrible so it is not impossible.

Seems Jeff agrees regarding Ojabo. He showed up and made a splash play even last year coming off his injury. Hopefully with more snaps he really comes on.

washington also was the one guy "stealing" nickel snaps from hamilton at the end of last year
he's consistently on the bubble every year and williams got first crack last year but i really dont know why washington isnt pencilled in as the top available slot option

Trenton Simpson was a massive liability last night.

Also I was at the game, redskins fans are absolutely thrilled about this preseason win, this is the happiest they’ve been in a long time.
Yeah I'm nervous about the Simpson and Kelly picks. They just flashed major, these may not be NFL players tape. Like Zay and Tavius and some of the UDFAs were not like that.

didnt watch live last night because it was 1am on a work night when it started lol

but positives from watching today so far

Travis Jones best defensive player on the field and it's not close - dude was dominating starters - still needs to be quicker to disengage but consistently could not be handled 1v1

John Simpson is gonna be our LG and that's absolutely fine - wouldnt surprise me if he doesnt feature in preseason game 3 - feels like he's won this competition now

Flowers also doesnt need to be playing in preseason 3

Vokolek I think has out-performed Kolar in all situations we've been able to see them both this Summer... not saying that's gonna translate to roster slots but Kolar has disappointed where Vokolek has really put himself into the category of UDFAs we might be sad if they get claimed

I get that everyone likes Keaton Mitchell but I think by the order of entry it's really clear that he's RB5 in the coach's minds and idk that he's making it to the 53 - saw lots of takes this morning before i watched about Mitchell nailing a spot and I'm just not convinced - think he's the 2nd half of preseason game version of Justice Hill on that first drive - definitely a guy to put on the PS and see but not a guy I'm saving a spot for

Ar'Darius Washington looks like he's not only making the roster but may well be the top slot CB option

Simpson feels like someone I'm fine with not smashing it last night - missed a bunch of camp, not done much hitting and thrown into his first action

obviously not what you love out of a 3rd round pick but we dont need him to be amazing this year - he was a pick for future years moreso - as long as he's a factor on special teams and improves then fine - but you're right that it's not a great start to what we've seen of him

I 100% agree with all of this

Minus cj stroud, i think houston got a nice up and coming team.

He might be a starter as soon as next year. We gotta hope he was just getting reacclimated because that performance was big yikes

Betting your season on a player "not having the balls" to do something is a bold move. Especially considering that it is probably the smartest thing they can do in terms of maximizing their income. After all the entire reason that RBs lose value is that they get too many carries so by playing only half a season under the tag they can both show that they are still elite AND minimize the carries they get thereby keeping their value high. Meanwhile your team does not get that tag money back until AFTER they miss the games so you still have 13m locked up (or whatever the tag ends up being but it will almost certainly not be higher than that).
well
a) JT isn't their season. That team isn't good enough to win with or without him
b) if he sits out half the season, the rest of the teams in the league will see that. And they'll know what he'll do any time he gets disgruntled about $. Just like if he comes back and decides he wants to "fake an injury", everybody else in the league will see that too. Not like the Colts won't put that out publicly either, much in the same way John made it known that Dobbins was "healthy" but no participating in camp. Everybody knows what's what at that point.
c) by sitting half the season, JT also forfeits half the franchise tag $. Which is a gigantic amount of $ to him. And at that point, the FA market will have been set for high-end RBs (which will be lower than he wants anyway), because there's about 8 really good RBs who are all scheduled to be FA's in 2024.

So he'll wake up mid-way through 2025, realize the $12-13M on the FT was actually really, really, really good value for his services, given what other players will and won't get in FA, and then realize "fuck I should have just played".

Hence why this isn't close to a 50/50 risk.

They seem to like him when he's healthy. Been too few and far between the last 2 years. But seems now is his opportunity and he's run with it. Just has to take it across the finish line. Have a really hard time seeing him not factoring in at this point, but we know they can make some head scratching decisions at times.

I 100% agree with all of this

i think if keaton mitchell makes the roster, in part it's because they like him as a returner in certain situations
but i also think that it would be a bit wild to go 4 RBs with the DB situation such as it is...

even with the seymours and worleys likely being available even post-cutdowns for extra cover...

Vokolek's the udfa that I think would be making this roster if Pat Ricard wasn't already on it

the udfa on the 53 streak was broken but we still have a track record - feels like mitchell and vokolek are the two with the best shots of making it but not sure either of them make the initial 53 but we'll see

we'll have to see what the deal is with RYS and Darby but i do think Stephens and Washington offer enough qualities between them to muddle in as CB 3 and 4 until Marlon's back and be plus players situationally

JAD the wildcard obviously

Said it in the game thread last night, but Vokolek with Roman still here is probably an almost guarantee. Just seems we're going to be seeing a lot more 3 WRs on the field than we ever really have here and it makes it hard to justify. Think he's played well enough but is caught in the number's game. Probably could have even challenged Pat's spot with better blocking but that's been real spotty at best.
