2022 General Draft Thoughts

mostly not a ton of new info here about EDC or the draft but a couple of notes that interested me:

- ravens have around 185 players on the main board
- EDC will have only watched around 120 total guys now that hes the GM - which makes it even more appropriate when he's referred to day 3 as "scouts day"
- thinks we can get guys through the 4th round that can start in this deep draft class - said that historically only about 20% of 4th round picks statistically end up as "significant" players but that the ravens are a little better than that but not much
- doesnt see many grade gaps on the board... what he called "bald space" where there's holes in the board with big tier drops

probably most interesting part, contextually coming up because marlon asked if EDC would have drafted him, which we sort of know but it's always interesting listening to EDC talk about the process of scrimmaging prospects and stacking the board and running the room and how all that stuff is hashed out so that we can just draft BPA

also the stuff about having the fallback player you feel good about, even if they arent the guy you want and the haloti ngata year when the fallback got taken top 10

who was the fallback in the Ngata year?

I’m speaking KT or Hamilton into existence for my own personal selfishness. Fuck it. I’ll be emotionally damaged if we don’t come out of tomorrow night with one of those guys. I’m officially invested

So hold up, that's the 2006 Draft. The player we originally wanted was taken in the Top 10 AND the fall back guy was also taken in the Top 10? So Suggs and Ngata were guys drafted after the players they originally wanted were off the board. We know about Suggs being a product of the whole trade debacle when we tried getting Leftwhich, but I'm quite curious who we wanted in 2006 and who the fall back player was.

2006 NFL Draft Top 10:
1. Mario Williams DE
2. Reggie Bush RB
3. Vince Young QB
4. D'Brickashaw Ferguson OT
5. AJ Hawk LB
6. Vernon Davis TE
7. Michael Huff S
8. Donte Whitner
9. Ernie Sims LB
10. Matt Leinart QB

I have to think it was Huff and Whitner considering we drafted Dawan Landry in the fourth round that same draft. We were set at LB with Ray & Bart, we just got Steve McNair so we weren't looking for a QB. JO was still going strong at Left Tackle and we had Todd Heap so didn't need Vernon Davis.

wait when did he say the guy they wanted was taken in the top 10 in 2006
pretty sure he said that the fall back guy went top 10 and that was it

we know they wanted ngata the whole time because the browns strong-armed them into giving up a pick to take him 1 spot ahead of where he was

donte whitner was the fall back pick - EDC says it in the video

Interesting range. This only means EDC told him “if you’re there at 45.. you’re a Raven.”

100% confirmed. Welcome to Baltimore.

lol no way we get 92 straight up for an 8 spot drop in R2 haha

so he's picked a lot of fan favourites

I ain’t finna lie - I’d be pretty upset if we take a DT in the first half of the draft unless he has Aaron Donald type potential

Why isn't there more talk about Kaiir Elam on this board?

dude's gonna go in the 1st round and might go fairly high

sometimes a little reactively grabby (albeit think he was actually calmer and less panicked in this part of his game in 2020 vs 2021), was stacked vertically a few times when turning late to run down the field, sucks at tackling and helping out in the running game despite being a big dude

and that last issue probably gave everyone ptsd from matt lol...
