The Bad, The Ugly, and the Pathetic

post browns offensive and defensive stats + standings per Hensley on twitter:

A quarter of the way into the season, here is where the Ravens rank:

OFFENSE
Yards per game: 1st (482.5)
Rushing: 1st (205.8)
Passing: 6th (276.8)
Scoring: 1st (33.7)

DEFENSE
Yards per game: 27th (395.5)
Rushing: 10th (93.5)
Passing: 30th (302.0)
Scoring: 23rd (25.0)
well atleast the offense is good. Now if we can continue to produce on offense and get more consistent and improve the defense to atleast the middle of the pack, we could be in for a run. That being said, even if we don't make the playoffs, I'm going to enjoy watching Lamar and the offense improve for the remainder of the season.

We spend 32% of the cap on secondary players (ranked 1st) and we're ranked 29th in pass defense. lmao! Our pass rush is questionable, but that's inexcusable. Harbaugh said Defense is overplaying zone coverages. Doesn’t think it’s a matter of defense being complicated. Thinks guys are overplaying coverages rather then just doing their jobs.
We're paying guys top dollars who can't even do their jobs.

I'd argue that most of the guys doing this are not the ones being paid top dollars with the exception of maybe Jefferson

I guess the way to look at it would be this:
Jefferson is playing poorly, and he costs $12.6M (4th highest on the team)
ET is probably, at best, playing average, and he costs $7M (7th highest on the team)
Jimmy has the 2nd highest cap number on the team (highest among active players), and he's not contributing anything right now. He's missed three games already, and no indication he's expected back this week. I'd say, best case, he misses probably 5-6 games. So you'll have cap impact of at least $5-6M for no output, and that number grows the less he plays.
Tavon Young on IR with a cap hit of $3.6M.

So between injuries and ineffective play, you're basically paying at least $30M in cap space for what you're seeing, or not seeing, in the secondary.

I ain't gonna lie. I didn't think our offense was still this productive regarding ranks. Ain't this a bitch, our defense gets sacrificed for a seemingly adequate offense.

think about how many drives etc. we got into decent position and then either coughed the ball up or didnt quite convert into points - that's how we're doing it in terms of yardage

scoring is surprising to me but i think a lot of that comes down to us having put 59 pts up in week 1 (given the average pts per game of an average team is around 21/22 points i think - that's a lot of scoring in 1 game to bring up the average)

and i dont know what you mean about sacrificing defence for adequate offence...

Pierce and Judon are the only guys worth keeping IMO. Makes FA next year a lot less stressful.

it's definitely more than an adequate offense and has room for improvement.

The part where some of these guys are out hurts, but I think he meant the players that are on the field.

A possible tonic for the Ravens inability to cover the middle of the field is the quarter defense, which would include safeties patrolling both ILB spots. The Ravens didn’t do that against the Browns, but they reduced Onwuasor’s snap load to 54 of 60 snaps.

Many folks have been calling for more playing time for DeShon Elliott. He was inserted as an ILB in dime packages, but the downs and distances he played were more like those of a normal ILB instead of a pass defense specialist (like Levine). Elliott lined up to play 9 snaps (including 2 penalties, the down/distances were 1/10, 1/10, 2/10, 2/5, 1/10, 1/20, 1/20, 2/15, 3/3). He looked to be playing fast, which is what the Ravens have seen from each of their ILBs, but he should also add ball skills and coverage/pass rush flexibility.

I mean this past game:
-Andrews drop
-Moore pulling off a Jeremy Maclin
-Ingram fumble
-Hollywood drop

As for the sacrificing defense for the offense, it's more in jest about the football gods making our defense suck lol.

I am not so sure about Pierce. I wouldn't trust him to be in shape ever again. Plus, BW has a big cap hit next year. He is also much better run defender.

The thing is, we are calling for more playing time for Elliott at his position, not ILB.

BW has a big cap hit but we only save 4.3m in cutting him. I'd keep him through the 2020 season and then cut him to save 10m. Of course we have to have someone good enough to take his place. Maybe Ngata wants to come out of retirement.

That's what I meant - we can't realistically cut him even if we wanted to.

So I largely agree with this take, BUT, this is gameplan specific to me.
AND, I'm not sure how well this works with Williams out. Quarters means you've basically got 7 DBs on the field. That's effective against a pass heavy team, but do we really think taking Onwausor off the field in favor of like Levine or even Clark/Elliott is going to help us defend the run without Williams?
I personally don't. If I were an OC, and I see you in quarters coverage to start a drive, I'm pounding Chubb over and over and over again, and probably in a no-huddle scheme. And I think I'd be pretty effective doing it.
If you have Williams, or are doing a better job stopping the run with 4-5 guys, I think this can work and work effectively. But there's a reason why a lot of teams won't play any more than 6 DBs, even in a pass heavy league.

I will praise Wink over Pees for one very important thing to me... Pees would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, play anything more than Nickel coverages. He despised the the idea of having 6 DBs out there. Even in those infamous Pees games with the "prevent" defense, he still was out there with like 2-3 LBs on the field. It was comical. Most teams in this league basically have a "base" Nickel or Dime coverage (exactly what we do this year), and Pees would never do it. I believe the last year Pees was here, FilmStudy had him at like 10 Dime snaps the entire season. We play like 20-30 a week now, and I think we're better off for it (even if it doesn't show all the time).

Just imagine how bad this team would look on defense if we had Pees forcing us exclusively play Onwausor and Young/Board in coverage, regardless of game flow or success. You wouldn't even see somebody like Clark/Elliott or Levine on the field.

You talking front 7 or the whole team?

Because if they're the only two from the whole team, you've got a LOT of starters and holes to fill on defense. A LOT.

You'd be losing a good chunk of your secondary (Jimmy, Carr, Canady), your best ILB (Onwuasor), your second best pass rusher (McPhee), and a versatile guy like Levine. And that's assuming you keep both Judon and Pierce, which I personally doubt you keep both.

not paying peanut, jimmy and carr are old. McpHee is cheap from here on end. Levine will be 34
